About our home

A 10 year old contemporary home with sea views and lots of sun to be enjoyed from 3 decks. Surrounded by native birds and a native garden in a quiet, private location. Perfect for people who like walking coastal paths and village cafes. The house is well insulated with efficient heating, including a gas fire and underfloor heating in tiled areas.

More about us

  1. We are a well-travelled New Zealand / English couple, wanting to spend a bit more time in England to maintain family connections and visit historical and beautiful places. Anne, formerly a project manager in the health sector, is now retired, and Howard is a self-employed information systems consultant.

We love the outdoors. Our favourite activities are hill walking and mountain biking. Howard, originally from Hampshire, UK, also likes boats and sea kayaking. We can do all of these activities within five minutes of our home.

We travel frequently, and appreciate the effort hosts go to in providing clean and comfortable accommodation. We are looking to exchange with like-minded people.

We designed and built our house in 2009. A bit like on Grand Designs, it was a labour of love, but every day we appreciate that the time and effort (and yes, money!) was totally worth it.

Our home is tucked down a private driveway on a hillside looking out to sea.

It is warm: well insulated with good heating systems, and it is full of light, with lots of large double glazed windows. As the sun tracks through the day there is always sunlight into the house. Because the master bedroom window faces east, we wake to a view of the sun rising out of the sea.

There are cliff walks in both directions. Turn right from our entrance and you head down the hill to Sumner village and coffee, restaurants and shops; turn left and you head to a surf beach and rocky coastline somewhat like the English Devon/Cornwall coast.

We have developed a garden of native trees and plants that encourage bird life. It really is a haven from a busy world.

Where is it?

Sumner is a seaside suburb of Christchurch, 25 minutes from the city centre and 45 minutes from the airport.
Our part of the neighbourhood is on a hill between 2 surf beaches -Sumner and Taylors Mistake. There is easy access to coastal walking tracks and the village shops, cafes, restaurants and movie theatre are a 30 minute picturesque walk or 5 minute drive down the hill. Birds and native bush surround our home which is situated in a quiet and private spot at the end of a long drive.
