“Derek and Mo's timber home is set high among beautiful NZ bushland overlooking Karangahake Gorge. A fascinating historical area with many bush walks and/or bikes ride along the old gold mining trails and tunnels. We enjoyed the whole experience and would recommend their home.”
Derek & Mo's reviewsAs a host (4)
“We had the most amazing hosts, and were treated from Mo with a superb salade, when arriving in Turangi, after our drive from Coromandel, this gave us a lovely start to relax! The house of Mo and Derek gives all the comfort you wish for on a holiday. We had a lovely fortnight in the very well maintained house, it feeled like home. Hope to welcome you in ours next year after Covid19 has gone. We miss you and Alexa! ”
“Derek and Mo's house is fantastic, very convenient and you really feel at home. It's well situated, above a wonderfull gorge and not far from the Pacific Ocean and the gorgeous Coromandel Peninsula. We've met Derek and Mo and they are really so friendly, that we hope we'll meet them again! We've spent 3 fantastic weeks in New-Zealand, and we loved the friendly always smiling people, the incredible landscapes, so different with rainforest in a place, high volcanic snowy mountains a bit further (it was early spring), hot springs where you can bathe in many places, and always surprising lookout places. We've also visited Auckland and Wellington, and even took the ferry to cross the beautifull Cook Straits. There are also many incredible walks near Derek and Mo's house through mine tunnels, and under the spectacular rainforest and its beautifull singing birds! We hihly recommand Derek and Mo's house and New-Zealand, you won't be desapointed.”
“I spent last Christmas with Mo and Derek and they were the perfect hosts. They are very easygoing people. I had an enjoyable, relaxing Christmas at their very exceptional place overlooking a gorge. There are wonderful river walks we did in that nearby gorge and also the coast and the Coromandel Peninsula is very near. Half a year later, Mo and Derek visited me in Germany . They were fun to be with and we had a great time together. I'm happy to have met them and I recommend their home and hospitality wholeheartedly.”
Where is it?
We are in a private and picturesque area, centrally located in the middle of the Noth Island at the southern end of Lake Taupo. The road we live in is actually just outside of Turangi with the mighty Tongariro River separating the road from the town. The walk to the town centre takes about 20 minutes or 5 minutes by car or 10 minutes by bike. The much larger town of Taupo at the Northern end of the Lake is approximately a 45 minute drive. Turangi township has most facilities including supermarkets, restaurants, pub and cafes. It also has 3 sports shops catering for all outdoor activities and in particular freshwater fishing.
Turangi is often referred to as the town for all seasons for no matter what outdoor activity, the seasons cater for those people who like the outdoors. Whether it be for swimming in the lake in summer, the base for hiking/tramping/walking such well known tracks as the Round the Mountain walk (4 days), the Tongariro Crossing or other shorter walks along the Tongariro River or for the main activities in Autumn through Spring for fishing and Winter/Spring for ski-ing. The Tongariro River is a world famous, fly fishing only, river for both rainbow and brown trout with fish of 3kg or more not uncommon. There are other well known fly fishing rivers flowing into Lake Taupo as well as the lake and other lakes in the immediate area. There are 3 ski fields on Mount Ruapehu approximately 45 minutes from Turangi.
For more entertainment, shops, banks and restaurants Taupo would be a place to visit and if you like Art Deco, Napier, to the East, would be a good place to visit - approximately 2 hours. Napier is in the Hawkes Bay region which is well known for its magnificent wines with many vineyards open to the public with fantastic food.
