About our home

The Bluberry Farm is an organic B&B in the stunning Akatarawa Valley of New Zealand. Our farmhouse was built using a passive solar design, and our wood fireplace supplements the warmth throughout the winter nights while adding a wonderful homey feeling.

The kitchen has an ample country design with native wood cabinets. The kitchen connects to the dining room and entertainment space.
The swap would be for a room in the bed and breakfast. It has a king size bed and bunks could be moved in to the room if you have children. A large patio for parties and BBQs also sits behind the house. The house is surrounded by an organic herb, kitchen, and wildflower garden.

The host is Nima Sherpa and his family. They are Shepas from Nepal and Nima is also our organic farm manager. He grew up leading treks up Mount Everest and we have been blessed enough to convince him to come and live on our farm and help us develop our organic paradise. If you come to stay you are welcome to pick Nima's brain about his experience in the Permaculture gardens, blueberry fields, and mountaineering.

We have a house cow, Heritage breed chooks, Cayuga ducks, a friendly dog (Frodo), mischievous cat (Gandalf), and guinea pig (Gimley).

The farm would best suit travelers who enjoy stimulating conversation, enjoy the warmth of truly good people, don't mind sharing clean comfortable bathroom facilities, and would enjoy their bed being made for them. There is also an office desk available and broadband.

More about us

  1. David and Mandi and Sam have to shift for one year off of the farm to go to Sydney for work commitments. We need a place to stay that will help us get on our feet and find a more permanent place to reside. A little about us: We are in our mid 30's and Sam is 8. David is in the IT industry and Mandi is a Lactation Consultant. Sam attends Montessori school and will be home schooling for the year we are away. We love to travel and are willing to do non simultaneous travel especially to Europe and around Australia.

Nema Sherpa, Lac Phutti and Brucesanam are three of the sweetest people we have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Nema is in his 30's quiet, confident, and competent and always has a ready smile and is always looking for how he can best help someone. Lac Phutti is in her early 30's mischevious and wonderful and always has a hug waiting for you. Brucesanam 4 years old and is a sweet heart. He is a spiderman fan and brings joy into a room when he comes into it. This is the family that will be hosting you during your stay and they will make your stay unforgetable. If you have young children arrangements can be made for a fee for Lac Phutti to watch them while you take in the Wellington night life. She is also happy to cook you dinner for a fee if you don't feel like bothering. A seperate refridgerator will be available for you to store all of your food to cook. The house is yours to use as your own. Relax and stay a while.

Where is it?

We searched to world to find our home. For us it is perfect. It is in the country, full of birdsong, next to a beautiful pristine river, tucked into a valley, surrounded by beautiful bushland. Yet it is a reasonable commute to Wellington (45min). And only 10 minutes to the City of Upper Hutt. Wellington is a wonderful city to explore, with its culture, restaurants, cafe scene, and nightlife. Upper Hutt is a bit more rustic but you can get everything you need there and the locals are very friendly.
The Akatarawa Valley hosts a single lane road that winds through regenerating bush land. The Akatarawa River is a fast moving river with beautiful brown trout. The Karapoti road famous for the Karapoti Classic Mountain Biking race a five minute bike ride from our house. This reserve runs from the back of our farm to the Kapiti coast. It is popular with Quad bikers, horse riders, trampers, and mountain bikers. There are many Lord of the Rings film sites around our farm. We are famous in Wellington for having the most beautiful swimming hole in the region in our backyard. In the summer Pick Your Own blueberry guests enjoy basking on our beach and jumping from our jumping rock, but in the wintertime it is the perfect meditation spot. We have pukekos in our wetlands, Tui's in our Flax bushes, and bellbirds in our Native trees. The farm is certified organic and our certification auditors stated that it was the most biodiverse farm he had ever audited.
