About our home

Our home is spacious, comfy, sunny, family oriented and simply furnished. It is located in Strathmore on the Miramar peninsula and has a panoramic view to the north of Wellington's bush and villa clad hills. The house is recently renovated and extended. The upper story includes the master bedroom, kitchen and a large open and airy living area with polished wooden floors made of native New Zealand timber ("matai"). There are two bedrooms downstairs with an additional room (the "massage room") that can be used as a fourth bedroom. There is an outside deck to the west, and a garden on another level above the house. We have a rabbit and guinea pig and two cats which the neighbours will look after. The house is ideal for a couple and 1 or 2 children. Our car would be available for use.

More about us

  1. We are Joanna Tennent, Andrew McCallum and our daughters Eleni (13) and Romy (11). Joanna is a trained and experienced practitioner of therapeutic massage. For a number of years she has taught courses in the Diploma of Massage Therapy degree for the New Zealand College of Therapeutic Massage. Andrew is a policy analyst for the Ministry of Economic Development specializing in issues to do with globalisation and its impact on New Zealand. He is also a devoted fan of Bob Dylan. Our ambition is to take our daughters travelling at least once in the next two years. We have set our hearts on staying in Venice - something to do with the exotic nature of the place, the canals of course and the art, culture and history. We enjoy music, camping, skiing, hiking, theatre, netball, dance, gardening (especially Joanna and Romy) and food.

Where is it?

Strathmore is located at the southern end of the Miramar peninsula in Wellington, about ten minutes from the airport. Although close to the airport there is very little airport noise as the flight paths are north to south. Unusually for Wellington, the houses in our neighbourhood are generously spaced, so there is a general feeling of openness and warmth. The surrounds are not heavily built up and there are large tracts of native bush. Often native New Zealand birds such as Tuis can be heard. Srathmore is about 15 minutes by car and twenty minutes by bus from the Wellington CBD. The bus service is good and regular. Locally there are cafes and shops, especially in Mirarmar village. Miramar is also the location of Peter Jackson's studios where the Lord of the Rings films and James Cameron's Avatar were made and where the two "Hobbit" films will be made.
There are bush and sea walks close by, surfing in Lyall Bay (ten minutes) or sailing on the harbour. There are galleries, theatres, cafes, restaurants and museums in the city, including Te Papa - the National Museum of New Zealand. Wellington is a good base from which to visit the top of the South Island or to venture north to the Wairarpa (a day trip), or further north to Napier (famous for its art deco buildings) or Lake Taupo - which is in fact a very large volcanic crater!
