About our home

My home is a well-insulated 2-bedroomed cosy cottage, recently renovated, with plasma TV, leather couches and modern decor on a 840 sq m section in a quiet street. The separate garage has an additional shower and toilet. The modest lawns and gardens are maintained. My bike, golf clubs, tennis racquets, and other outdoor equipment may be used, as well as various indoor games.I am used to having cats and dogs as pets but choose not to have any here at present.I hope the 4 new birdboxes will be full this coming spring.

More about us

  1. Hello,I'm Jan. I'm reasonably well-travelled and am looking forward to my first experience of house-exchange in December. I am retired, and although still actively involved as a volunteer in our local community, I'm no longer bound to so many deadlines and events.

My daughter works in Edinburgh in a professional capacity. I am keen to visit her and re-experience the culture of this beautiful city as well as several other interesting places, especially in Ireland and the UK. My priority is a safe, comfortable abode I can retreat to at the end of each day. I like to play Bridge and enjoy regular tennis, walking and recreational cycling.

All going well in the world/my world, I would like to go to the Northern Hemisphere annually, or even twice a year for the next few years.
For me exchanging homes will mean I can travel more frequently and for longer periods of time.I am fair and freckly and therefore don't mind going away for a few weeks into the cold, when it is typically very sunny here in Whangamata.

Where is it?

Whangamata has a Mediterranean climate and is well-known as one of NZ's most picturesque and safest beaches. At the northern end of the beach the Moana Anu Anu estuary harbours a new marina and a jetty. The beautiful Otahu Estuary, home to the endangered dotterel, graces the southern beach. It's a wonderful, quiet place and I especially enjoy kayaking there.

My cottage is south-west of the local Surf Life Saving Club; a 7 minute stroll to our 4km long surf beach with its white, pristine sand. (See attached photos). There are lots of other super places to walk and bike.e.g. bush/hills.

The public (9 hole) golf course is but two streets away, and the more challenging 18 hole course is out on the edge of town alongside a newly established cycleway. There are also other facilities such as tennis and squash courts, and croquet and bowling greens. Many of the 86 local clubs welcome visitors. e.g. Bridge, snooker,Ramblers, Rock'in Roll. The township has several specialty stores, including an art gallery, and there is a supermarket down in the light industrial area. I consider my self fortunate to live in a safe neighbourhood and to have responsible, tidy neighbours.

It's usually 1.5 to 2hours drive to Auckland, our main international airport, and a similar distance to the rich farmlands of the Waikato.
Cars may be hired from the airport from $NZ22 per day, and there are some bus services and a door-to-door shuttle available to and from the airport.

Whangamata is a great township in which to experience 'Kiwiana; (e.g the annual Beach Hop; Whanga Week; Run Walk Festival; and the Brits at the Beach Weekend) be it at the height of the resort season, or during the quieter, mild winters.
