About our home

2 story, 3 bedroom, 3.5 bath modern duplex close to the water, overlooking the beach on the Pacific ocean; 50 km. south of Lima, Peru. 4 km. in from the Pan American Hwy.(free of noise and smog). Santa Maria del Mar is a safe and peaceful community with modern infrastructure; mixed Moorish and Spanish style architecture; sparsely populated from April to November. (Autumn, Winter, Spring) and then it fills up during the Summer months (December to March). This is when we rent our home. It is available for Love Home Swap the rest of the year..

Along the Pan American Hwy. we are situated only 2 hours north of the spectacular Paracas Marine Reserve and Candelabro Island and 4 hours north of the famous Nazca Lines. We are also within a 45 minute drive to some of the finest dinning and culinary experiences in all of Peru and South America, namely, the Lima Gastronomic Explosion along the Costa Verde and in such districts as Chorrillos, Barranco, Miraflores, San Isidro and many others, including downtown "reco vecos", hidden 'holes in the wall' with outstanding and reasonably priced food.

If you are looking for the tranquility of being next to the ocean with 24/7 waves, free of road noise, city hustle, bustle, and people chatter, this is the place for you! If you are looking for some R&R next to the ocean and within a ten minute walk to neighboring San Bartolo where there are stores, ferias and open-air markets, pharmacies, and excellent Peruvian seafood, Asian and Italian restaurants accompanied by relaxing sidewalk cafes, then this is for you!

Ultimately, our home is for tranquility and recovery from trips into the interior - a place where you can catch-up, re-group, organize, reflect, meditate, plan and coordinate communication and transportation for your next venture outward. We are close to everything but far enough away for you to genuinely relax and enjoy your stay in Peru.

More about us

  1. We're a couple that is semi-retired with a desire to travel and visit some special countries we've always wanted to see. We have time to travel during our summer when we rent our home on the Southern coast of Peru.

  2. We are active grandparents, especially Pati who is engaged with five of our seven grandchildren. Our other two live in Dubai and we visit them regularly. She is a part-time teacher who specializes in child education. I own a small Coffee Shop which keeps both of us busy here at home in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. I plan to open another one next to our beach home in Lima. I used to direct and oversee a wide range of international NGOs; designed and managed social development projects and education programs world-wide. I co-founded a not-for-profit University in Bolivia. I am still closely connected.

  3. We love people. We love to get involved in community activities. We love to engage in significant conversations around a hot cup of exquisite coffee or tea. We love to build sincere friendships with others who also love the same. We seek diversity, history and culture. We listen and are passionate about learning. We try to be happy and joyful beings!

Where is it?

Santa Maria del Mar is surrounded by the Pacific ocean to the west, the Andes mountains (Cuzco, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca) to the east, the cities of Lima, Ancash and Cajamarca to the North, and the cities and sites of Paracas, Vineyards of Ica, Nasca Lines and Arequipa to the south. It's a great access point to all that Lima has to offer and yet you are not really inside the city of Lima.

Next door to Santa Maria del Mar is the small and quaint town of San Bartolo with less than 10 000 inhabitants. From SMM it's a fifteen minute walk along the 'malecón' where you can see the ocean and beaches from above. In San Bartolo you will find a variety of first class restaurants, local shopping and open air markets, pharmacies, and mini-supermarkets. You can get around for US$ 0.30 per person by taking a local 'moto-taxi'. There are also buses that leave and arrive from Lima every 15 minutes.

There is a lovely plaza on the edge of the malecón at San Bartolo with typical coastline church and City Hall. The views of the ocean are spectacular from this point! There is a natural water spout - a hole in the rocks nearby where water is jetted high into the air by the pressure of in-coming waves. It is a well visited local attraction.

Buzzy restaurants
All along the coastline of Peru you will find great restaurants such as Quincha, Segundo Muelle, Panca, Cala, Rocío, and Sarita's. This is especially true within the 'Cono Sur', a string of small beach communities dotted along the Costa Verde of Lima heading South to Km. 50. You will experience mostly fish and seafood in addition to the famous Sarita's boiled pork sandwiches served with sweet potatoes and fries.
Cool bars
Mostly located inside the fine restaurants all along the coast and throughout greater Lima.
Cozy cafés
My favorite cozy cafe in San Bartolo is Tenile. San Antonio cafes, pastry shops and deli are all over Lima. Starbucks is cozy and dependable with good music and Peruvian coffee.
Bit of culture
Lots of Museums in Lima including the famous Gold Museum in Monterrico and the Anthropological Museum in Pueblo Libre. Pre-Inca ruins (Huacos) are everywhere. Especially, in the District San Isidro
