About our home

The house is located in the quaint town of Malveira da Serra, Nestled in the foothills of Sintra mountain overlooking valley and ocean. Sintra is a Unesco World Heritage Site. The house itself is natural, made with local stone from the area and wood inside the house. It's peaceful and comfortable with beautiful views overlooking the lush valley and ocean from almost every window. There are three main bedrooms and then a sleeping loft perched high for extra people preferably agile, non sleepwalkers. The house can sleep 6 in the main bedrooms. There are added sleeping spaces as well, a single room off the living room, there´s a fold out single sofa bed in the annex room with the bathroom. The loft sleeps two. Maximum 10 people. Along the west side of the house, overlooking the rest of the garden and the valley below, there is a cobblestone terrace and grassy garden with a bbque and an outdoor covered eating area. It's all very scenic and lovely for warm summer evening dinners. The house has wireless internet as well as cable TV, DVD player with many movies to choose from. For the Winter months the house stays cozy with double glass windows and fireplace as well as a heating system. There is also an air conditioning system for the summer months.

More about us

  1. We are an American family living in Europe for the last 22 years. We've lived in Holland, Spain and now Portugal. We love the outdoors, hiking and surfing. We run a holiday rental and do Christian based volunteer work here in Portugal. Two of our kids have moved back to Santa Barbara, California, for school and work which is why we would love to swap houses with someone there when we visit. Our friends and family live there, nearby as well. We are also open to visiting other places after this Winter Dec 09- Feb 2010.

Where is it?

There are scenic footpaths to private beaches in front of the house as well as on the mountain behind the house, the beaches are just a 20 min walk from the house. It's a 5 minute drive to Guincho beach with great surf and sun bathing. 10 minute drive to the beautiful historic town of Cascais. 10 min. drive to the dramatically historic town of Sintra with castles and palaces perched on the mountain. 25 minute drive or train to Lisbon. This is also the place for surfing, sailing, kite surfing, paddle boarding, mountain biking, golfing, horseback riding, tennis, rock climbing. All these within a 10 km radius. If you and your family are interested in learning how to surf or paddleboard, our friend Luis who is an experienced surf trainer, will take you out for lessons. If you want to try to surf on your own after this, there is a learning board and an assortment of wetsuits in the garden shed. Also in the garden shed are two mountain bikes which are waiting to be ridden on the mountain paths. Down in Cascais at the train station, there is a free tour bike rental. Just give them some identification and you can borrow the bikes all day if you like. You can cruise along the rocky ocean cliffs all the way to Guincho beach on a red paved walking/biking path or the opposite direction to the various coastal towns from Cascais to San Joao swimming in the little coves along the way, drinking coffee in the sunny beach cafes.
