About our home

The drive to Praia da Marinha is under three minutes and the nearest beach, Benagil, is only 1,1 km away. The nearest large supermarket is a 7 minute drive away.
The plot the house is on is a whopping 12000 plus square meters.

The main bedroom has a 180 cm by 200 cm bed. It has a spacious bathroom en suite with a shower. Next to the bed there is cupboard space the size of a wall with an abundance of hangers.

The second and third bedroom each have a 150 cm by 195 cm boxspring bed. They both share the bathroom that has the bath in it. Both rooms have more cupboard space than you probably need.

Sitting room:

There is a 49 inch 4K SONY widescreen TV with local cable TV and international satellite TV, a dvd player and an extensive dvd collection. The sofabed can be used when there is a 7th or an 8th guest. Together with the topper (thin mattress) this bed sleeps as comfortable as any other.

The kitchen has an oven, dishwasher, washing machine and cooker all by Siemens and a very large LG fridge freezer combi. It makes ice cubes and crushed ice after the water is filtered. You will find a Nespresso coffee maker, a Dolce Gusto coffee maker, a filter coffee maker, a french press coffee maker, a blender, a juicer and a toaster. I enjoy cooking so you will find pretty much all you need.

The bathrooms are modern and recently updated, showers are very good with strong jets. The hot water comes from a solar powered hot water reservoir on the roof with enough water for all guests.
There is air conditioning but the house does not really need it. The house is built in traditional Portuguese fashion with very thick walls, relatively small windows and very high ceilings. This keeps the heat out. Most windows have shutters aiding in keeping the house very cool and it's very practical for late sleepers. You do need to shut the shutters when you go out and open the windows during the evening or switch on the aircon cool it down a little. All windows have been fitted with screens to keep bugs and mosquitos out. Obviously these are the ones you open at night. In the reviews you will find confirmation about how cool the house in fact is.

The house is situated on a very large plot of land which means nothing is blocking your view. There are pear, almond, pomme granate, guava, avocado, lime, lemon and fig trees. Pomme granate and guava are great in October and November. You will also find grape vines on the land. At the back of the house there is a cistern that was built in 1907 which collects the water that is pumped from a borehole. On top of the cistern an outside living room is built with shades and comfortable lounge beds. Eating outside in the shade is also on the menu. Except for a traditional pizza and breadoven you will also find a permanent BBQ outside.

Where is it?

The area is called Caramujeira, and is very close to Praia da Marinha and Benagil as well as Carvoeiro and Lagoa. If you have been to the Algarve before, you will know what a great place this is. If you don't then you'll have to take my word for it. I have lived in some amazing places such as Llandudno near Cape Town but the Algarve has always been my favorite. I spend a lot of time here as the weather is great for the most part of the year, the people are friendly, it is safe here, the food and wine are very good. I must admit that the wine in Cape Town is better and so are the restaurants but you can't have it all can you? Here in the Algarve you can actually take a dive in the sea without a shark alarm going of or freezing your .... off :)
