About our home

Our 247 square meter home was completely redone in 2017. It has 4 bedrooms + 2 other rooms used as a TV room and an office. It enjoys panoramic views over the entire city of Lisbon and the Tejo river with amazing morning and afternoon light throughout. Smokers can use the verandas and though it isn't child-proof, children are welcome. A baby cot is available. The apartment enjoys heating/AC in all the main rooms and bedrooms. Hot water via solar and heat pump. Since this is our only home and we have school-aged kids, we tend to mostly have availability to travel only during the summers and school breaks.

More about us

  1. We are a family of 4 with kids aged 17 and 15..

  2. Michael was born in the US and works as a university professor and a non-profit administrator. He has experience developing itineraries for tours of Portugal. Regina is Portuguese and works as a consultant in statistics/healthcare-related. We lived for 20 years in the US and returned to live in Lisbon full-time in 2014.

  3. We love good design, authentic food and experiencing other cities and regions like a local. Half the family loves to ski and one of us surfs.

Where is it?

The Lapa/Estrela neighbourhood is home to loads of embassies and foundations, not to mention our neighbour Madonna ;) Incredibly scenic and quiet, but just a short walk to get to the action when you want it. There are several transport options at your doorstep, including the #25 trolley that goes to the Cais de Sodre metro and in the other direction it goes to the Campo de Ourique neighbourhood, voted Lisbon's best. Walk to the Jardim de Estrela, the Rato metro, and the shops and cafes of Santos just down the hill. If we swap cars, ours enjoys street parking for residents, but we do not have a garage. Walk down the hill to the Santos and Madragoa neighbourhoods for several great food/cafe options and visit the last wood-fired coffee roaster at Flor da Selva for free samples and great beans! Walk to the Time Out Market in about 25 mins and take the trolley or buses back up the hill to home. Cheap bike/scooter rentals abound along the river and you can take the commuter rail to the beaches of the Cascais line.

Buzzy restaurants
Clube de Jornalistas, Come Prima, Geographia, Raizes, Varina de Madregoa, Sr. Vinho for classic fado just down the street. A short walk to Nannarella for great ice cream.
Cool bars
Le Chat or Foxtrot
Cozy cafés
Mila, Heim cafe, Dede's, Cristal and Chefe
Retail therapy
Amoreiras mall is easy to reach via bus from in front of our house.
Bit of culture
Museu de Arte Antiga, Basilica de Estrela, MAAT, CCB
Walks in the park
Jardim de Estrela, Prazeres Cemetary
Spot of exercise
The riverside running/bike paths just down the hill
Day tripping
Sintra, Cascais, Guincho, Costa de Caparica, Serra da Arrabida, Evora, Obidos
