About our home

Lovingly restored villa on an island in the River Ceira, at the foot of Serra da Lousã, not far from the medieval university city of Coimbra, Portugal's third city and capital of the central region. The river is safe, clear and warm for swimming and boating in summer. The villa has its own exclusive pool in the lush garden, plus a comprehensive riverside kitchen garden.
About 300 mtrs downstream is a river bar (May - Oct) which serves simple snacks all day and every day. It can be reached on foot, by boat or swimming!
Despite the dreamy location, the villa is not far from town - less than 10 minutes by car to Lousã, which has four supermarkets, restaurants etc, and barely 30 minutes to the quaint old city of Coimbra, with its charming narrow streets and little squares.
Within an easy drive are the Roman ruins at Conimbriga; World Heritage Tomar (its magnificent castle was the refuge of the persecuted Knights Templar); the lovely canal city of Aveiro; vast golden beaches of the Silver Coast; the prestigious 27-hole golf club of Montebelo near Viseu.
But right on your doorstep are the hills of the Serra da Lousã, arguably Portugal's finest, with its haunting 'lost' slate villages amid breathtaking scenery.
Lisbon is a little over 2 hours by train from Coimbra; Porto a little over an hour. Both are an easy drive on the uncrowded motorway.

This is the REAL Portugal, not a rip-off tourist ghetto! Yet English is widely spoken and usually there are English menus in the amazingly inexpensive restaurant - and you won't believe the price of wines!

Neighbourhood

Hidden away in a river valley, on an island formed by the River Ceira and a picturebook old canal. River is warm in summer - great for swimming or fooling around on boats. You will likely spot kingfishers and, if you're lucky, otters. Just 300 mtrs away, the river bar is a great spot to take a drink and snack, or dive off the board into the only deep stretch. Wonderful walks and clean fresh air in the gorgeous hills above the town.
