About our home

Our traditional Portuguese farm house is nestled in a river valley, surrounded by nut trees, olive groves and mixed woodland. A short walk up our valley there is a large waterfall and there are lots of little water-pools to paddle in too. We have several acres of land and there are many woodland trails in the hills around us too. Our house is 15 minutes walk to a perfect Portuguese village, with supermarket, playground, old church, cafes, cash machine etc and a short 10 minute drive to the larger town of Penela where you will find a Moorish Castle, restaurants, amazing playground, library etc. There is so much for families to do, indoor and outdoor public pools, animal park, riding centre, clay workshops and a large network of 'river beaches' to swim in , often with cafes and amenities. The beach is 50 minutes away and there is a network of mountain village walks, where you will find abandoned villages, all clearly sign posted. The area is excellent for mountain and road biking, walking, swimming etc.

The area is steeped in culture and history. All around you will see the traditional farmhouses and watermills next to the waterfall. Just 30-50 minutes away you will find the historic cities of Tomar and Coimbra. Tomar is the birth place of the knights templar and Coimbra is Portugal's oldest university town, both with ancient churches to visit and lots of kids attractions.

We have goats, 2 dogs and chickens.

Whilst the house feels remote, we have two nice neighbours and the house is only 1 1/2 hours from Porto International Airport or 2 hours from Lisbon International Airport. The road network is excellent and very easy/quiet to drive on.

  2. We love a healthy lifestyle, good food, the outdoors, and dancing!

  3. At home we grow our own fruit and vegetables, milk our own goats, and live as sustainibly as possible, and we get on very well with our elderly Portuguese neighbours who teach us a lot about the world
