About our home

We bought our home in the summer of 2003 and moved from England to Portugal in November 2003. The house is situated half a mile from the city walls of Óbidos, and approx 3 miles from the town of Caldas da Rainha.

The house is 10 years old and we have totally refurbished the inside as well as re-designing the patios and garden, plus installing a pool.

We have a good size kitchen with oven, halogen cook-top, dishwasher, fridge/freezer and breakfast bar; the counter-tops are granite. There is also a small laundry room off the kitchen with washer and drier. Leading from the kitchen is a sun-room which acts as a dining/seating area and has views to the garden. Also on the ground floor there is a bathroom with shower, one double bedroom with large closet, hallway and a good size sitting room with open fireplace and wood-burning fire. There is a wide screen TV with cable. Upstairs there are 2 further bedrooms, both with closets, and one bathroom – both bedrooms have balconies with views to Óbidos. There is also a basement, which we use as a cinema/recreation room.

In the garden we have a good size pool, a toilet/changing room, shower and a bar. There is a gas barbecue as well as a charcoal one. There are also sunbeds, sun-shades and table and chairs. We have a garage and private drive-way.

More about us

  1. We are a British couple (Pauline and Allan) who moved to Portugal to enjoy our retirement. Pauline's motherlives with us and also travels with us. Before we retired we had a Management Training oganization specializing in Leadership and Team Development. This business took us to many parts of Europe and also the United States; we spent a lot of time in the Mid West and California.

We have exchanged twice and it worked extremely well. We treated each others’ homes as our own, with care and respect. We all agreed it was a worthwhile experience.

We have family in London so would welcome a week's exchange within the central London area. Also we have a son and family in San Francisco and would love to visit them again. Also South of France would be great.

Where is it?

We are situated half a mile from Óbidos – a quick walk from the house. This is a beautiful place with narrow cobbled streets and is relatively unchanged from medieval times. You can walk around the ramparts. There are a good selection of restaurants and bars in Óbidos. We also have 4 restaurants just 3 minutes walk from the house, plus a coffee shop/snack bar.

Caldas da Rainha is approx 3 kms away and this is a bustling town with a daily fruit and vegetable market, also a fresh fish market. There are a mix of upscale and traditional shops and restaurants, a pretty park, museums, historical buildings, bull-ring etc. The town has 3 or 4 large supermarkets which stock good produce at very reasonable prices; wine is particularly good value. We are just 1 mile from the A8 motorway with easy access to all parts of Portugal. It takes less than an hour to drive into Lisbon on this motorway. If you don’t wish to drive to Lisbon, there is also a good bus service from Caldas da Rainha, which runs regularly from the bus station, this takes you into a metro station with easy access to all parts of the city. The Rapido bus service is non-stop to Lisbon and takes just over 1 hour.

We are also quite close to excellent beaches such as Foz D’Arelho, Sao Martinho da Porto, Peniche, Balleal, Nazare, and further south those of Santa Cruz, Santa Rita.

We have very friendly neighbours, some of whom speak English
