About our home

Our house, which is intended to be our second home, is situated in the old part of Gabrovica, a small village near Črni Kal in the Slovenian Istria. We wanted to give a new function to our old farmhouse, which has belonged to our family for generations, while at the same time preserving its homeliness and original form. As we ourselves like to travel, cycle, hike and discover the particularities of different places we visit, our wish was to create a holiday homestead that would offer everyone a welcoming environment.

The house (approx. 140 square meter), which is intended to be used exclusively by our guests, features two units. Both of them have a living area with a kitchen and a bathroom on the ground floor, and two bedrooms on the first floor. The guests are welcome to use the shaded terrace and the yard with barbecue, both facing south with a view of the Osapska Dolina valley, as well as the private parking lot. You can find more information about the house and surroundings on the web page

The cities worth visiting at the seaside are Koper and Piran with their beautiful city centres, which have been well preserved for centuries from the times of the Venetian Republic, not to mention the many museums and galleries, as well as the city of Trieste in Italy, which is only a 10-minute drive from Gabrovica. Venice (Venezia) is just about an hour and a half of drive away and another top destination - Ljubljana is reachable in 50 minutes. Closest international airports are located near Trieste (60 km), Ljubljana (110 km) and Venezia – Venice (150 km).

Istria is not only interesting for its rich natural and cultural heritage and mixture of cultures, there is also its cuisine, which is equally interesting and rich as well. Olive oil, wine, fish, fresh fruit and vegetables, air-dried ham and sea salt from the salt pans are the typical local products that form the basis for the excellent traditional dishes both in local trattorias and fancy restaurants, and in the traditional Osmicas.

As it appears, Slovenia is becoming an important culinary and winegrowing destination. The now world famous Hiša Franko (Franko House) with the chef Ana Roš is only 150 km away from Gabrovica, whereas the equally renowned trattoria Pri Lojzetu with Tomaž Kavčič is located only 60 km away. Slovenia is the only European country that connects the Alps, the Mediterranean, the Karst and the Pannonian Plain. Diverse gastronomy is therefore part of its culture and that's one of the reason for nominating Slovenia for the title European Gastronomic Region in 2021. Together with that we should mention that Koper – the most important city on the Slovenian coast – was selected as one of the finest Top 100 Green destinations based on jury-reviewed sustainability for the year 2019. But quality is not measured only by the number of stars and references on online evaluation sites, and we can confirm that the quality of some local suppliers and winemakers is definitely on a par with the Michelin Star winners. As there is no disputing about tastes we can recommend you our choices of excellent restaurants and winemakers in the surroundings which are, of course, completely subjective and based on our own taste.

The Osapska Dolina (the Osp Valley) and Kraški Rob (the Karst Edge) above Črni Kal are mostly associated with free climbing, while the surrounding area also offers several other options to actively spend your free time in nature. Besides the world-famous Postojna Cave and Škocjan Caves (Unesco Heritage), you can also choose to visit some other caves which can be visited without any additional caving equipment and are occasionally open to the visitors for guided tours.
The favourable location enables quick access to the most important cycling and hiking paths and the seaside with various kind of beaches can be reached in a 10-minute drive, so everyone can find an activity that most matches their wishes. The most popular cycling path is the 120 km long and well signed Parenzana, which follows the path of the former railway between Trieste (Italy) and Poreč (Croatia).

In the case of simoultaneos exchange there is a possibility to swap also the car. In the house there is a Wi-Fi available and can be used free of charge. There are no stores in Gabrovica itself, yet large shopping malls can be reached in a 10-minute drive in the direction of Koper or Trieste.

The off-limit period for exchange is from 1. July till the end of September. In the remaining period it’s always possible non-simultaneous and simultaneous exchange.

Where is it?

For those who are not intrigued by the hustle and bustle of the coastal area, however, being active tourists want to enjoy the fast access to key locations in the surrounding areas, Gabrovica is the ideal choice as the access to the motorway is very fast and comfortable . The border with Italy is located only a few kilometres to the west, the main highway and railway connections with the hinterland and Ljubljana run towards the north, if you go east, you can reach the border with Croatia in 20 minutes, whereas taking the modern highway to the south, you can reach Koper in ten minutes.

Buzzy restaurants
Nimis, Capra and Za Gradom in Koper and several Osmicas.Osmicas can be recognized by the wooden signpost with a branch of ivy placed beside the road. They can only offer wine and food produced on the farm. In the Trieste Karst, these would usually be white and red house wine and air-dried ham, sausages, bacon, eggs and pickled vegetables, whereas in Istria and the Karst in Slovenia you would also find cooked dishes, such as the Yota, a traditional Istrian stew, or sausages and sauerkraut. As each individual Osmica can usually be opened only twice a year, it is worth checking which of them are opened during the time of your visit.
Cool bars
Snack Bar in Koper, several bars in Trieste
Bit of culture
The cities worth visiting at the seaside are Koper and Piran with their beautiful city centres, which have been preserved from the times of the Venetian Republic, not to mention the many museums and galleries. When in Koper, which is considered to be one of the oldest Slovenian cities, it is especially worth visiting the Tito Square with the Loggia Palace, the Praetorian Palace and Assumption Cathedral with its 53 m tower, which can also be accessed. In Piran, visit St. George's Parish Church, located high above the sea on a prominent spot dominating above the city centre, the Tartini Square and the harbour. Whoever plans to visit Izola and Muggia (Italy), will soon discover similarities between these historic cities, as these – unlike Trieste – were part of the Venetian Republic for a long time.
Walks in the park
Miramare castle park near Trieste
Spot of exercise
Cliffs under the Karst edge and the Karst Plateau
Day tripping
As the access to the motorway is very fast and comfortable, we also recommend visiting some of the slightly more distant attractions, such as the Lipica Stud Farm, where the world-famous Lipizzaner horses are bred (26 km), the widely known Škocjan Caves (24 km from Gabrovica) and the Postojna Cave (49 km from Gabrovica), the fortified medieval settlement of Štanjel on the Karst Plateau (50 km), the Duino Castle from the 14th century, now owned by the Thurn und Taxis family (41 km), the Miramare Castle with its extensive park from the middle of the 19th century, which served as a summer residence to the brother of Emperor Franz Joseph (24 km), and last but not least, the mouth of the Soča River (67 km). A slightly longer drive will get you to Ljubljana (95 km) and Venice (190 km), both of which definitely deserve a full-day visit.
