Durban is a multi-cultural coastal city with a sub-tropical climate (year round sunshine!) which is colourful and full of warm, laid back people. It has been voted the best city to live in, in South Africa for many years, Africa’s leading city destination, as well as being voted one of the top 20 travel destinations in the world! So it is certainly a place worth visiting:)
It also has a number of fantastic African safari destinations within driving distance , some of these are the best in the country!

We are a family of four- our kids Finlay and Francesca are 5 and 3. We are very open to where and how long we stay,, but anticipate that we would like to travel between May and July 2021 - this very conveniently coincides with our Durban winter- which is the best time of year to visit our stunning city as there is no rain, and the humidity is not oppressive like in the summer months; Durban winter is the best beach weather of the year!

We both lived overseas for a number of years in our 20's and are very passionate about travel and immersing ourselves in new cultures and experiences, and we own and run an Airbnb Management business called Happy Host.

Joshua has just fully recovered from stage 3 colorectal cancer, and we have had a very stressful 2 years of many treatments and surgeries. He has unfortunately been left with a permanent stoma bag, but he is a real inspiration who is back on his surfboard and running our business, and embracing life to the fullest again. He was only 40 when he was diagnosed last year , so as you can imagine, it has been a challenging time for all of us, especially trying to run a business as well as look after tiny children, so we want to embrace life and take a sabbatical for a few months, and just enjoy being a family with no stress

Neighbourhood

Voted the South African city with the best quality of life for several years running, Durban has a winning combination of ingredients for an unforgettable stay. A vibrant city on the shores of the Indian Ocean, it combines idyllic beaches and sweeping natural landscapes with a thriving gastronomic scene and refreshing creative spirit. British Airways’ now flies direct from London to Durban 3 times per week.

Home to what’s known as the Golden Mile, Durban is blessed with swathes of soft sandy shores that appeal to surfers and swimmers alike. This balmy coastal expanse is in fact four miles rather than one, and it’s easy to mark out a quiet spot here to stretch out in the sun.

There’s also plenty to see off shore. If you’re fortunate enough to visit during June and July or September and October, you are likely to catch a glimpse of the humpback whales and southern right whales on their migratory route. Year round, visitors can witness dolphins diving through the waves near Umhlanga Rocks. The Sardine Run, when shoals of pilchards migrate from the southernmost point of Africa to the warmer waters off Durban’s coast between May and July, is a huge highlight for wildlife lovers too.

A must-see when you visit Durban, the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve is an extraordinary 76 hectare haven of flora and fauna. Take a stroll along the boardwalk to appreciate the unspoilt beauty of this picturesque habitat and its wildlife, which includes vivid mangrove kingfishers as well as fiddler crabs and mudskippers.

Further afield but well worth the journey is the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first Natural World Heritage Site. Spanning an impressive 328,000 hectares, the park has a staggering variety of natural environments, from coral reefs to salt marshes and dense woodland, with plenty of head-turning inhabitants such as hippopotamus, crocodiles and elephants.

Morningside, where our home is situated, is an upmarket and leafy area of Durban that is centrally located to all the beaches malls and attractions that this incredible city has to offer.
