“I recently stayed at Adrian’s property at Castellar de la Frontera, Andalucía. (September 29- October 2, 2018) My experience was extremely bad. I am a very satisfied member of Love Home Swap having done quite a few exchanges. The property is in very poor condition and is misrepresented on the listing. I wish I could attach photos of the property which I took a few days ago that I have forwarded to Love Home Swap. My hope is to prevent another member having a very negative experience like I had. Among the problems I had include: The front door of the cottage had a broken glass window which had not been replaced. One of the two toilets was broken - It had a bad float valve so I had to turn off the water every time I used it. There was a second toilet, but it was outside the house and had a broken door on it. The listing says there are two bathrooms - that is very misleading. The listed washing machine did not work. There was an an abandoned swimming pool full of debris. In defense of the owner, the listing did not say there is a swimming pool, but it is a terrible eye sore. The entire property had a very bad musty odor. There are actually two separate very small buildings which are both over-filled with furniture so you can hardly move around. It appears the property is primarily being used for storage of personal property and old furniture. The photos on the listing are very misleading. We moved out of the property to a hotel after the first night. One good thing I can say is that the friend of the owner named Gaby, who met us and arranged for our access, was extremely nice. She did everything she could to make us comfortable. She said she spent four hours cleaning the property prior to our arrival. Despite her best efforts the entire property was very musty, had dead bugs lying around, and was cluttered with the owner’s personal property. I think the owner has not been at the property in several years. There is no way this property is worth 150 points. If repairs were made on the property, all of the old personal property and excess furniture were removed, and it was thoroughly cleaned, it might be worth 50-100 points. It is very rustic but there is only so much to be said for old world charm. The door to one of the two buildings is about a 4 foot head bumping entrance that requires an awkward step down to get in. Do not book this property. *********LHS-Host's Reply********** I was extremely distressed to read your recent report on your stay at my property and was sorry to hear from my housekeeper, Gaby, that your wife,s ill health prevented you from enjoying your surroundings. As the first LHS member to visit, we cannot contest your comments with reports from members of other, similar organisations as this is not compliant with the policy of LHS. However we have had many guests without complaint and more usual comments have been "magical", "heavenly" and "homely" but perhaps these visitors could see beyond the back door and the autumn leaves in the, otherwise, empty pool.My property is described as "small and simple" and as my "vacation home". We were last there in June when we totally painted and decorated inside and out and saw to any necessary repairs. Since then Gaby's son, Janos, has lived there (with his fiancee) and has been responsible for its upkeep, including the garden. He has not used the annexe as this is reserved for guests but his future mother-in-law stayed shortly before your arrival and had no problem with the inside toilet. According to Gaby, you asked how to turn it on and off as the grinding mechanism was " too noisy". It then flooded.Fortunately Gaby was with you and could clean the resulting mess. I can only conclude that this flooding caused the "odour" and made turning it on and off necessary. I will attend to this when I return next month (November). There are two bathrooms, one in the main house and one in the annex There are two toilets, one in the en-suite bathroom in the annex and one on the outside of the main house. The second has been named by a guest as "the toilet with a view" as it has a wonderful view of the lake. Gaby was aware that the washing machine had stopped working shortly before your arrival and consequently offered to do washing for you. This was declined. The machine has now been repaired. The missing window was part of the front door and is behind a shutter and therefore presented no danger. It has now been replaced.I simply do not understand the comment about our "personal property" . All of our "guardian's" property was put on the upper bunk and covered with a blanket since you were only staying for three nights and would not, presumably, want to use this space. Our personal property is in one very small wardrobe (the other wardrobe is empty), spare bed linen and towels are in small chests of drawers. Some books, soaps, shampoo, shower gel and hair dryer were left for guests use and similarly useful products and utensils in the kitchen.Private buildings within the Spanish National Parks cannot be altered or extended and are, therefore, small. Hence the small door on the annexe. I,m sorry if you, Ted, hit your head. The other, bigger door on the other side was left closed off for Security reasons. This leads me to complain that when Gaby came past on your third day day (Monday) to see how you were she found your car was not there. However the main, outer gate was wide open. She went in to check if your wife was there alone and found the front kitchen window wide open and nobody there. Through the window she could see a "huge bag waiting to be stolen". She managed to shut the window from the outside and locked the main gate. She later left a message for you asking you to lock up properly before leaving. After you returned the keys on Tuesday, Gaby went to clean the house and was horrified at the amount of trash you had left, including unwrapped food in the recycle bin. She also wrote to me " After cleaning the house before they arrived there sure were no insects lying around. I can't know if one fly died afterwards "......Had you told me, rather than Gaby, of your wife,s condition, I would have been able to express my regrets and suggest that such a rural retreat might not be suitable for her. ”
