About our home

Our characterful home is situated in the protected Sierra Maria National Park which is a mountainous region of Southern Spain approximately 45 minutes drive from the Mediterranean Ocean. Whilst it benefits from stunning views, diverse wildlife and near total privacy and seclusion, it is actually only 4kms from Velez Blanco, an unspoilt village with it's whitewashed houses, a magnificent castle undergoing restoration, large church and convent along with a plethora of small café/bars and hidden away shops. Surprisingly for such a small village, it also hosts two first class restaurants.

If you enjoy an outdoors lifestyle then this is the ideal location for you. Walks, cycling, bird watching and nature trails aplenty, we regularly witness Vultures and Golden Eagles soaring close over head (the park is a reserve for them) along with Bee Eaters, Wild Boar (they don't soar overhead of course), badgers etc. to name just a few of the varied wild life we have here.

We have chosen to pursue a very eco friendly lifestyle here and as such, our electricity comes from Solar panels which produce 90% of our year's electricity requirements. A small wind turbine and a gas powered generator cover the shortfall. Heating is from two log stoves (we only burn logs cut and prepared by ourselves from the local forest when they are felled by the Park Ranges; there is a log shed adjacent to the house which is kept full) and our water is fed from a local subterranean reservoir via the village and is clear and pure. We do cook and heat water with Butane gas using portable bottles so haven't cracked the eco bit completely yet. Anyone living here must obviously therefore be quite practical and "hands on" as a certain level of "monitoring" is required to make sure use does not outstrip supply! Having said that, we have all the modern conveniences (50" HDTV, Satellite, Wireless Internet, Fridge/freezer, Microwave etc) as we do enjoy the luxuries in life too.

We have two dogs, two cats and two parakeets so one must love animals and be prepared to look after them as well. Our's is a fantastic home and I am sure you would love the experience of living in a real Spanish area, it is beautiful.
