Waking up to the sound of peacocks, taking the fishing boat out for a spin around the lake, sipping a gin and tonic at sunset on the deck whilst watching kites swoop down to collect their meals from the shimmering lake. Welcome to our little slice of rustic paradise in the lesser explored North Western coast of the tear drop island of Sri Lanka.
Our humble studio cabin with a mezzanine floor for some added space, luxurious outdoor shower, fully equipped kitchen, decking over the lake with a secret bath tub for those that fancy a soak with a view (and a glass of wine of course) is situated on an acre of an old coconut plantation. We also have a basic yoga deck right on the lake which can also be converted into a romantic dining spot on the less windy days.
Whilst you can just enjoy the serenity of the lake and surrounding farmland, the ocean and endless sandy beach is only a 5-10 minute drive away, or a 20 minute cycle, if you fancy a change of scenery.
We have cultivated a third of the land to grow our own tropical fruits and seasonable vegetables and herbs. We also have chickens to ensure you always have access to the freshest eggs.
We have a caretaker that looks after the land and the chickens, so just sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labour.
We're a couple with a baby on the way! I own The BNKR Camp which is a fitness camp and healthy cafe situated right on the beach in Kalpitiya. We spend most of the year in Sri Lanka and the rest of the year in between the UK and New Zealand.
Vicky is an entrepreneur with a background in travel marketing and Rich is an accountant. But don't hold that against him. He's just a fun guy that happens to love spreadsheets.
We love the outdoors, we love dogs (always rescuing them around the area!) and we love our garden. Rich is an avid kitesurfer and I try to pretend I'm a keen gym goer...seeing as I own one! But mostly like wine.
Sweeping sandy beaches that stretch as far as the eye can see. The Indian Ocean sparkling in the perpetual sunshine and kites dancing in the skies. Local fishermen lining the beaches with their daily catch and nets, and villagers going about their day. School children all dressed in white against the burnt red of the soil and the mouth-watering smell of spices wafting through the air as the sun sets behind the swaying palm trees, getting ready for another day in this rustic paradise.
Quite the poet I know but Kalpitiya really is a hidden gem. Sri Lanka’s El Dorado. Apart from what Cortes seeked in gold you’ll find coconuts in abundance. And what it lacks in bars and restaurants, it gains in charm and purity.
Expect a kitesurfing mecca (so can get windy!), some of the best whale and dolphin watching in the world, scuba diving, kayaking, yoga, fitness camp and just one hour from Wilpattu NP where you can spot wild elephants, leopards, sloth bears and crocodiles.
