Where is it?

My home is 15 minutes from the Katunayake/Banderanaike airport , 35 minutes to Negombo and 35 minutes to Colombo using the highway out of peak hours. It is a four minute walk to the beach - only safe for swimming in pools at low tide but great for jogging or playing cricket, frisbie etc and a six minute drive to some unusual rock pools where it is safe to swim. My handyman/chauffeur/cook is a former fisherman who speaks good English and for any fishing enthusiasts, he can initiate them into fishing in the canal or off the bridge at Negombo. Sunset is a good time to walk along the beach or go for a drive to the Negombo lagoon.

Buzzy restaurants
Colombo - my favourites are Momo's by Ravi (Chinese dumplings; low budget, Zylan in Rosmead place - Japanese, Chinese and Sri Lankan, a low-key Vietnamese restaurant also in Rosmeand place, Paradise Gardens Gallery Cafe, Alfred House Garden Road housed on Geoffrey Bawa's office and of the Colombo hotels, the most congenial atmosphere is the ground flor of Cinnamon Grand. Pegasus Reef hotel close to my house has wonderful seafood, though its grounds are somewhat boring congenial, Prego at Negombo does a mean oven-baked pizza and serves Sri Lanka and Italian food Ministry of Crab in old Dutch hospital Colombo,. For Sri Lankan food Curry Leaves restaurant Hilton C'bo; Nuga gama restaurant at Cinnamon Grand C'bo; Culture Colombo; Curry Club in Dutch Hospital C'bo. Pedlars Inn cafe inside Galle fort is a MUST if you go South
Cool bars
The best bar I know of for younger people is downstairs in the Galle Face hotel where a beer and wonderful snacks can be had by the sea at sunset - or a glass of red and spag bol - not very Sri Lankan! The Buddhist culture and the old-fashioned values regrding relations between the sexes mean that bars and night life are less in evidence in Colombo than they were in the '60's. Don't go further than jogging on the beach across the road from my house early morning or towards sunset
Day tripping
Negombo. Colombo. Take the Gampaha road and turn off any small road in the rice fields and drive slowly round the modern-built individually designed houses in tiny villages in a sea of rice paddy. Similarly, take the Negombo road and turn down any right hand side road, drive slowly and check out the types of houses - you will also hit the Negombo lagoon
