“We enjoyed a brilliant and truly memorable three weeks in Gunnila and Bengt’s stunning, 500 year old apartment in Gamla Stan in the heart of Stockholm’s Old Town. Gunnila’s daughter Sophie kindly welcomed us to the apartment and was most helpful telling us about how things worked, where to visit and what to see locally. The location is perfect as it is very close to the Royal Palace, Opera House, museums, many churches and numerous cafes, restaurants and bars which are right on the doorstep. The narrow snow-covered streets, cozy cafes, and little village squares are truly delightful to walk around. It is ideal for anyone interested in opera, classical music, or choral works which can be enjoyed in the nearby opera house as well as in the free lunchtime and evening concerts held in many of the surrounding churches. The central part of Stockholm is also only a short 10 minute walk away. The apartment is extremely charming, full of character, and furnished with gorgeous antique furniture, chandeliers, and art works. We loved the kitchen and the coffee machine, the original wooden floor boards, sunny living room and the nice warm comfortable bed. We felt very relaxed there – spoilt too. It was a pleasure to return each day to such a nice warm, cozy home after being out for the day in -20C temperatures and snow. Truly a home away from home! Gunnila and Bengt are wonderful, warm and generous hosts and we felt very lucky to be able to spend a delightful short time together in Brisbane on their arrival, and also in Stockholm on the day we left to return home. We would love to catch up with them again and highly recommend their charming home in Gamla Stan. ”
Where is it?
The old medieval town center of Stockholm (Gamla Stan) is full of interesting sites, museums and busy restaurants and cafes.
its buzzing with life during days but also magic during evenings when you can stroll the alleys and look up into the apartments and see old panels and roofs inside the apartments. Stockholm has around 80 museums and lots of good music at the Opera, Berwald hall and the Concert hall.
All Swedes are quite friendly and god at speaking english so you can ask for tips anywhere and to anyone.
We recommend you to take the Stockholm Ghost Walk in Old Town since its both interesting, scary and great fun!
Museums in Gamla Stan: The Royal Palace, the Nobel Museum, Museum of Medieval Stockholm. All museums are in Swedish and English.
Some museums of interest at Djurgården (available by ferry five minutes away from our flat) could be the famous ABBA museum which is great fun and interactive. The museum of Wasa: Swedens biggest failure in medieval time since the ship sank after only five minutes at sea! The Viking museum. Skansen outdoor museum. The museum of Liqour and many more.
Its also nice to take a roundtrip by the sightseeing boat and look at Stockholm from the water.
Five minutes walk to Södermalm which is the home to all Swedish hipsters. Look cool and stay trendy!
