About our home

We have a 2 storey villa on a hill overlooking the town in a large garden with several old oak trees in a green residential area about 5 min walk from center of Mariefred.

On the entrance level (upstairs) there is a large hallway, 2 bedrooms (one with a double bed), a bathroom with bath tub and a spacious fully equipped kitchen/ living area with TV and computer. There is also a balcony facing south west for lovely dinners and evening enjoyment through the light summer evenings.

Downstairs is another living room area w TV, Wii and a fireplace, 2 more single bed bedrooms, a bathroom and shower and a sauna down the hall. There is also a special room for laundry machine and drier. Downstairs there are 2 exits to a large wooden deck with furniture under our lovely cherry tree facing south west so you can choose sunlight or shade. There is also a large trampolin with safety net.

The town is a well preserved jewel by the lake Mälaren, picturesque with its mainly wooden homes painted in reds and pastels. Mariefred is home to world famous Gripsholm Castle, a royal castle with its roots in the 11th century housing the Swedish National Portrait collection. Hjorthagen is a large deer park with free roaming deer, walking paths and great views of the town should you venture up the hills among the old oaks. There is also a narrow gauge steam train run entirely and very proudly by volunteers all through the summer. It can take you to our famous "Cake Castle" Taxinge, where you can enjoy a real Swedish "fika" at its best - an entire smorgasbord of cakes, pastries and cookies of all kinds to be enjoyed on the lawn by the lake.

The town centre holds a Farmer's Market every Saturday in the summer. It has two grocery stores, bookstore, pharmacy, a couple of stores selling handicraft and home decor. There is a Swedish liquor store, Systembolaget, where you can get expert help to choose great wines for your Swedish delicacies among other things. Postal services and gas station as well as several restaurants and great cafés. We are proud and pleased to also have a highly rewarded bakery in town!

Mariefred is surrounded by water and forests, surroundings that really entice the active vacationer with canoeing, kayaking, hiking and taking lovely dips in small lakes, often alone! There is a great place to rent canoes in Mariefred that will deliver them to a nearby lake system in a National reserve: Marvikarna where you cannot only canoe but hike on fantastic trails and take dips in clean water. A real gem that comes highly recommended by our family!

There are hourly (more frequent during rush hour) trains to Stockholm, the Swedish capital but also a lovely centuries old steam ship that can take you to and from Stockholm in 3 lovely hours across the lake Mälaren.

So you see, Mariefred offers great variation to your vacation, nature, water, city life and small town enjoyment.

We are looking for homes in Europe by the sea, San Francisco general area and Thailand for now! But the sky is the limit.
