Our home is in a two-story house (owned by us, with a tenant/friend in the first-floor apt.) We live on the second floor apt. made of wood. More photos of the living spaces can be sent by request.
The apartment has a master bedroom with a comfortable queen-sized bed, standing fan, spacious closet, dresser, and sash windows (w/shutters) facing beautiful trees in the back of the house. There is only one bathroom with a tub/shower w/hot water. There is a smaller, second bedroom on a loft upstairs with a full-sized bed (accessed through a stairway from the living room.)
The apt. is designed as open-concept, with kitchen, kitchen counter (sits 4) and living room in one single, spacious area. On the loft is a painting studio/computer area/library. A computer with internet service is available (dial-up.) The apt. has a nice verandah facing the garden, which sits four for breakfast or tea.
The entire home is very breezy and has lots of light, but shutters/curtains are in place if less light is preferred. The kitchen is well-equipped, with large sink with cold/hot water, gas stove/oven, microwave oven, toaster oven, fridge/freezer, blender, toaster, juicer, etc, plus all sorts of cooking utensils. There is a washing machine and dryer combo next to the fridge. The living room has a flat-screen 19" TV with a DVD and VCR, plus Cable TV service. There is also a stereo system with radio and CD player.
The apartment is compact, unassuming, yet comfortable, perfect for a couple (older children/teenagers are preferred, if any.) There is no A/C, but we've never needed it! The yard/garden is ample and has mahogany and black olive and mango trees and other trees and plants, like bouganvilleas that are in constant bloom and a yellow poohie that flowers in May.
Canaan is a small village located 10 minutes North of Crown Point International Airport, and another 10 mins. South of the capital (Scarborough). There is a green-grocer right around the corner, and a bakery right next door. The main road is a block away so if the use of our car is not preferred, taxis are available there and are very, very cheap.
A large supermarket is 4 blocks away, and it sells pretty much everything. There is also a smaller grocery store close to it that opens until 8 PM on Sundays when everything else is closed... Other 2 large supermarkets are close-by, within a few minutes from the house, by car. There is a new shopping mall about 5-7 minutes away, by car. It has a Scotiabank, a Radio Shack, and various clothing and fast food stores, and a cinema multiplex to open later in 2007.
The neighbourhood is NOT upscale in any sense, but the neighbours are kind, decent people. It is a little noisy in terms of (light) traffic because the house is located at the corner of a secondary street and a gravel-laid lane, and the sound of the occasional car carries up into our house. Caribbean people like to listen to loud music, so that could be a problem, as they drive by sometimes with their music on... especially on the weekend or during long weekends. There are also several dogs around (plus our own!) and, yes.., they bark! so if you're the sort of person who cannot tolerate noise, this is not the place for you. It is reasonably quiet most of the time, otherwise, and it is well-located, minutes away (by car) from lots of wonderful beaches (world-famous Pigeon Point, Store Bay Beach, Stone Haven/Grafton Beach, Grange Beach, etc), restaurants and about 30 minutes away from our beautiful rain forest, home to an incredible number of species of birds and flora, and breath-taking waterfalls.
Beautiful Tobago is quite small, everything is really close-by! We have a car which would be available, so getting anywhere in the Island would be a car-ride away!
We have lived here since 2002, and we have done a lot of the work on the house ourselves, as we are familiar with wood-working, and enjoy art and decoration. We also like books, good music, good cinema, tennis and going to the beach with our dog GG... and love all our pets (5 dogs and 2 cats.) We work on the construction (as project manager) and painting/museum areas, respectively. Our downstairs tenant Brian is our good friend and he would be available to help you find your bearings upon arrival and during your stay. We also have many good friends who would gladly be available for any assistance regarding the house, and would also recommend places to go to in Tobago. Remember that our car would also be available, but you would need a taxi from the airport upon arrival to get to the house. It is an automatic, Mitsubishi Liana that sits 4 comfortably. It has a radio/casette player and A/C.
