About our home

A light, spacious, old meets new, 4 bedroomed house (with modern zinc/cedar extension) situated in the popular South Devon town of Ashburton. A town full of cool chic restaurants, antique shops and endless scope for outdoorsy adventures. The house is full of curiosities, playful fun and luxury comforts.

We are on the southern tip of Dartmoor, Ashburton, a great busy town adorned with antique shops and fantastic eateries (as well as an art centre offering a great schedule of events from comedy to music to yoga). We 5 minutes from open moorland with its endless opportunities for adventures such as wild swimming, walking, cycling, climbing, bouldering, kite flying. We are 35 -45 minutes from the nearest and best South Devon beaches, including Bantham, Mothercombe, Bigbury and Salcombe. The house really is very special and easily accessible.

Inside the house you'll enjoy light bright spaces, open fires, period features, underfloor heating, expanses of glass, sonos system, comfortable beds, quality linen, satellite TV, unlimited wifi, high end kitchen with range cooker and plenty of mod cons including a great cold press juicer which is fantastic in the Autumn when the orchard provides figs, apples, plums and pears for fresh morning juices.

Outside, there's a field and fruit orchard to roam, play park, trampoline, arial hoop, zen garden, formal garden with sunken patio & fire pit/bbq, a low level running stream with granite step access, cargo climbing net and unlimited scope to build den after den after den. It's fair to say, its family fun heaven.

Plentiful parking & storage for bikes, canoes etc - caravans/camping by request only. Potential to bring your own horse, again by request only.

The house is very peaceful, completely private and truly is an exceptional space in which to enjoy a holiday with family or friends. It sleeps 8-9 very comfortably.

To suit keen foodies we keep herbs, spices, sauces and cooking oils available for your use. You are welcome to help yourselves to what is there and we only ask that you replace what you use with an equivalent measured bottle of something of your choosing.

To suit any adventuring visitors, there is a a wealth of local information books, including those on Dartmoor walking, running, wild swimming, local ship wrecks, local myths and legends, OS maps, National Trust etc.

If you need to get some work done, there is a small desk overlooking the orchard on the large upstairs landing and the house has unlimited 20Mb-s broadband, subject to fair use.

Nearby there is a luxury adult day spa, zoo, forest park (with excellent bike park), trails, activity centres, indoor pool for private rental, golf, sea safaris, horse riding, aquarium and more...

Two very child friendly cats live here (not upstairs). They're called Kipper and Moneypenny and are clean, healthy, friendly, loving cats. They are short haired 8 year old cats who come and go as they please (cat flap) - they are not used to going upstairs, spending their time in the wooden floored living area. They are exceptionally friendly with small children (with normal respect for animals applying). We ask that you feed the cats each day (all food provided, they only eat a nutritionally complete dry food, no wet food). We do not allow them upstairs/on beds etc.

Where is it?

Ashburton is country chic, down to earth, trendy and cultured. Gateway to the moors (2 minutes away), the motorway (easily accessible), Totnes (15 minutes away), the South Hams (Salcombe, Kingsbridge etc) 35-40 minutes away, Exeter (30 minutes away) and Plymouth (30 minutes away). It has a tremendous amount to offer for those wanting, cool vibes, outdoorsy adventure and countryside chills.

The house, sits a few minutes drive from the town, or a 15 minute relatively easy walk (mostly flat with the exception of one short slight hill). It's a buggy friendly walk. The house sits opposite a home that offers private indoor swimming pool hire and next to an organic smallholding, growing and selling roadside, plentiful organic salads and vegetables.

The house sits in its own electrically gated plot (with cctv), with an orchard lining the left of the drive and an open field to the right. This field and orchard are available for your use and are overlooked by the house. The home incredibly private, whilst being very close to the town centre.

You do not need a car to enjoy being here for a weekend or perhaps even a week, though Ashburton is only on mainline bus routes, not the train so you'd have to be willing to bus or taxi if you wanted to leave Ashburton itself.

The moors is 1.5 miles up a a mighty hill from our house, perfectly easy to cycle as there are slightly longer routes which reduce the initial incline. I run, cycle and horse ride to the moors with ease regularly. I would suggest that the cycle is likely a little much for anyone under the age of 8.

Buzzy restaurants
Ashburton has an abundance of great restaurants, we are spoilt for choice considering the overall size of the town. This is in part due to the fact that Ashburton is a great destination to not only live in but to holiday in too. Our favourite restaurants are: Rafikis, The Old Library, The Rust & The Wolf (all within few minutes drive/15-20 minutes walk) and a little out of town, the Live & Let Live in Landscove (15 minute drive). Do check them out on Trip Advisor.
Cool bars
Cafe Latino, Number 14 (wine bar) and Rust & The Wolf
Cozy cafés
Rafikis, Taylors Tea Shop and Cafe Latino.
Retail therapy
Ashburton is home to the monthly Ashburton Auction house, as such the entire town is known for it's antiques trail. We have over 10 antique shops full of curious curiosities, see for more information. In addition to antiques, we have Odds & Suds, a beautiful bath store full of sweet smelling homemade soaps, linen, throws, candles, gifts and more. Ashburton also has an award winning fish deli and artisan bakery.
Bit of culture
Ashburton lies on the southern slopes of Dartmoor in the heart of the South Devon countryside. Flanked by the Devon Expressway, that extends the M.5 to the historic naval port of Plymouth, it is situated roughly half way between Plymouth and Exeter. Ashburton is not only a splendid gateway to Dartmoor, but is also the ideal base from which to explore the whole region from Moor to sea. The scenery in the area is glorious in all the weather's moods and offers visitors opportunities for walking, pony trekking, canoeing, fishing and - if you like - just pottering. This ancient stannary town dates from Saxon times and has spread out from its centre along the courses of the little river Ashburn and its tributary, the Balland Stream. (Taken from the official town website)
Walks in the park
Too many to mention, we have two playparks in Ashburton (and also one at the house here!), but as for proper walks, you will find our home very well equipped to help you. We have a large array of walking/running books and OS maps and as keen runners, we can give you first hand tips on where to head out on the moors.
Spot of exercise
Running and walking is a dream here, on and off road, we have two fantastic public footpaths alongside the river just moments from our front gates, there is an indoor swimming pool across the road available for hire, there is a public outdoor swimming pool in the town open from May-Sept. The town has regular drop in yoga classes and there is an excellent cross fit gym in nearby Newton Abbot. Let us know what exercise you're keen on and we'll try to best advice on how you can access it during your time here.
Day tripping
Where to start... horse drawn carriage rides, canoeing, cycling, electric bike tours, zorbing, horse riding, the beach, surfing, boat trip...all is within easy reach. In terms of attractions we would recommend; Pennywell, a dream for those with smaller sub 10 year old children, River Dart Country Park, a dream for those with children 6+, Plymouth Aquarium, Dingles Heritage Fairground Museum and Totnes is a town worthy of a visit, especially on a Friday & Saturday (market day). Other notable towns to visit include Dartmouth, Salcombe/Kingsbridge and Widecombe in the Moor. Saltram & Killerton are also excellent nearby/potentially enroute National Trust properties.
