About our home

This is a character barn conversion with blackened oak beams and low ceilings full of features dating back to 1800's that has been converted in the 80's to a spacious modern home. It is an 'upside down house' with the bedrooms on the ground floor and the living space upstairs. There is a multilevel set up to the house which makes it very interesting. Quintessentially Devon!

The two master bedrooms have ensuite facilities one with bath and shower the other with shower only, the remaining 2 bedrooms share a family bathroom with shower and bath.

The living and dining room areas would easily accommodate a large family for meals/film watching with cosy evenings round the wood burning stove in winter. Sky TV/DVD player/BOSE stereo is available for use.

It would be a perfect place for families with children having a bespoke junior play area in the hayloft with stereo and DVD player and plenty of room to run around in the 1 acre garden.

The large hallway with slate floor is perfect for walkers having been out on Dartmoor or out to the river coming in to kick off their muddy boots with plenty of room in the utility room to dry off if required!

Access to the property is down a private lane where there is little / no passing traffic unless you count the odd tractor or land rover! There is access through electric gates to the double garage and large drive which can easily park 4 -6 vehicles if your parking is good.

The barn annexe opposite is the UK residence of my Aunt and her husband who live in Spain. Depending upon the time of year, they may or may not be in residence.

We have a cat Wizard and 3 productive chickens who we can arrange care for or if you fancy some 'pet sitting' then this would be great and you would get freshly laid eggs as your reward! We have family close by in case of any problems.

More about us

  1. I am a 40 year old mother of Jemima (3) also Dentist owning own multi award winning practice in Exeter with my business partner Sharon. I am married to John, an Intensive Care Anaesthetist who works at Torbay hospital.

We moved to Ashburton 4 years ago to be conveniently located for our respective work and we love it here and would like to share it with you in exchange for somewhere abroad to make family holidays more 'family orientated' and more affordable.

Our inlaws have been so taken with Devon and Ashburton that they have recently relocated here and will be living just down the road.

We both enjoy the outdoors and from here you can access everything you could wish for. You just have to have a sense of adventure and it is all here right on your doorstep.

Where is it?

We are situated in Ashburton just off the A38 main Devon highway from Exeter to Plymouth. We are 1 mile from the main link road but far enough away to feel right in the countryside, the river Dart being a short stroll away and the River Dart Country Park (check it out online) with all facilities and outdoor pursuit centre just down the road.

We have only 1 neighbouring property, the original Farmhouse adjacent to us and the annexe opposite that we are told used to be the cowsheds.

We have lovely views of the fields and hills across Ashburton.

Ashburton town is a 15 minute walk from the house and has a fine selection of shops; antiques, award winning restaurant (Agaric), Bar, Coffee shop/Cafe, Hardware store, post office, supermarket, award winning Fish Deli, Delicatessen with the most fantastic selection of local and national cheeses etc etc....I could go on. Check out the Ashburton website for information - just get the one in the UK not New Zealand!!

There are local pubs and typically Devon country pubs a short drive away and access to take away food; Chinese, Indian, pizza both in Ashburton and environs.

Nearest towns are Dartington, Buckfastleigh, Totnes and Newton Abbot. Main cities Exeter and Plymouth are a 30 minute drive either north or south for main shopping/bars/nightlife.

Nearest coastal access would be Teignmouth and Torbay (the English Riviera!!) or alternatively you can take a boat/steam train along the river Dart to Dartmouth and see the Naval college and quite a few castles along the way - well small ones anyway.

Access to Europe couldn't be easier with Exeter International Airport 30 minutes by car up the motorway. Check out their European Destinations at

There is a Local vineyard in Sharpham, garden centres/national trust properties all close by (Agatha Christie's house to name one) also Royal Horticultural society gardens.

From here there is easy access to Cornwall south over the Tamar bridge for fantastic beaches between 1-2 hours away.
