About our home

My home really is a typical traditional style Devon cottage, the oldest part being built about 400 years ago. It is situated at the northern end of Braunton village in North Devon. The photos shows the cottage's situation on the side of a small valley with a large hillside garden being a delight to walk around and giving splendid views (west) across the small valley to part of Braunton village and south to the UNESCO Biosphere reserve of Braunton Burrows. Viewed further in the distance is the lovely Taw Estuary with Hartland beyond.
There is a small paved patio outside the conservatory, about 20 m2 (220 sq ft) if you just want to sit outside or sunbathe in summer. There is a second TV in the Kitchen and a variety of classical, popular and world music CD's to enjoy. I also have a bread-maker and one of 2 microwaves is a combi doing all the work of a grill or oven etc. Two small notes- the default floor area shown for the cottage does not allow me to put in a more accurate measurement which is nearer to 95 m2 (1020 sq ft.) The bathroom photo is with a very wide angle lens which by nature makes interiors look big. It is quite adequate measuring about 3.6 m2 (40 sq ft).

More about us

  1. I am James, a semi-retired travel photographer but still travelling world-wide as indeed I have been doing for the past 45 years+, working for travel brochures, books, and all types of media. I still do this to a lesser extent these days and with more time and no deadlines anymore, the idea of living locally on my travels by way of a home exchange holds huge appeal. In Devon my great passion is to go paddle-board surfing, year round, at lovely Saunton Sands Beach about 2 miles from my cottage, when conditions are favourable of course. A paddle board is available if you are an enthusiast whilst surfboard and wetsuit hire are readily available locally. My small Citroen Berlingo van is equipped to get you to the local beaches and indeed for general travel if you need a vehicle. Please note however that it only has seating for a driver and one passenger but with a 2 litre engine and interior fully lined and fitted out with stove, shelves and carpet, it is ready for touring to - even as a "one person" camper vehicle! I also have a high quality mens cycle and can easily arrange that 2 be available for your stay. I have no pets as the wild bird life here is excellent with a very active feeding station on the patio.

Where is it?

My home and Braunton are situated about 6 miles west of Barnstable, an old market town, itself very useful for shops and stores larger than those in the village. The main attraction is undoubtably this whole area of North Devon being famous for its beautiful coastline, beaches and the landscapes of Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks, all within easy reach. There are just too many place to list! Please see: which alone will probably present you with more choices than you can handle - certainly in one visit! There are many miles and varieties of walks whilst local bus services are good plus a train service at Barnstaple. Nearest Airports are Bristol (less than 2 hours drive) and Exeter (about 1 hour 20mins). I have terrific local neighbours and friends who I am sure will be pleased to meet and welcome you to the area if you wish.
