About our home

Kingston is 20 minutes from Cambridge with its world famous university and attached Fitzwilliam museum, making it an ideal location for scholars on sabbatical. It is around an hour’s drive from London or the coast, and is available during the 2012 Olympics.

Our home has a small front and back garden, complete with fishpond and summerhouse, 2 bedrooms, living room with wood burner fire, exposed beams and integral studio/office room with folding privacy screen. The largely open plan ground floor features a dining room and ‘reading room’ in the full-length conservatory at the back with a central kitchen and bathroom with hydro-massage Jacuzzi bath. The living room and studio are insulated with triple and quadruple glazing making it exceptionally warm in winter and cool in summer and there is oil-fired central heating throughout. Wi-Fi, phone and 42” satellite TV are included. With a total footprint of 800ft2, the rooms are small –even by UK standards! - with 6’ 6” headroom in living room/studio area.

The swap could include our elderly and slightly scruffy but reliable and much loved Mercedes-Benz Vito 6 seater minivan and two mountain bikes.

Local amenities within 10 minutes drive include golf course with swimming pool and gym, 2 period ‘gastro pubs’ (pubs serving restaurant quality food), Indian, Italian and Chinese restaurants, sports centre, local shops/post office, hairdressers, health centre, dental practice, and a gothic church. Ideal for cyclists and walkers, Kingston is on the ‘Wimpole Way’ historic walk, and is surrounded by country footpaths and bridleways; horse riding is a local pastime. A local bus stop 100 yards from the house takes you into Cambridge or nearby villages. The city of Cambridge originally formed in the 13th century as a university town, has 2 theatres, 3 cinema complexes, many pubs, restaurants, music & arts venues, shops, swimming pools, and health and fitness facilities of all descriptions in addition to all 31 much esteemed colleges with their ancient treasures and historic architecture.

We are looking for a small house or condo with a nice view in either downtown Vancouver, West or North Vancouver – (ideally in or near Deep Cove).

We are a middle aged couple without children, who want to see more of the world before becoming too decrepit. We are both music academics - a PhD in traditional Irish/Scottish folk music, and a music psychologist. We compose, play, produce and lecture in music and music technology and fell in love with Canada and BC in particular during several concert tours. We both love the outdoor life; running, biking, walking and kayaking as well as eating out and just enjoying the scenery.
