About our home

Lovely family home, mainly dating to 1750s, in 40-acres of private grounds on the edge of a small village (walking distance to village pub). 9 minute drive to mainline station with direct trains to London (55 mins). 45 mins by car to Stansted airport. The gardens, with inter-connecting ponds and a lake with 18th century boat house, were landscaped by Richard Woods in 1784. The manor estate features in the Domesday Book (1086 AD) and, from 1559 until sold by King James I in 1610, was briefly a Crown property. It includes a 2-acre walled kitchen garden, 12 acres of woodland, 18th century coach house and 17th century cottage (occupied), newly-resurfaced hard tennis court, heated pool, trampoline and children's climbing frame. The village church, next to our house, dates from 1135 AD. Until 1559, it was the Bishop of London's country chapel (our house was the Bishop's palace) and is exceptional for its original frescoes. The village cricket pitch is also within the estate. Nearby is majestic 15th century Layer Marney Tower (www.layermarneytower.co.uk), built by the craftsmen that worked on Hampton Court and which was planned to rival it. We are also close to Dedham , 'John Constable' countryside. If you are looking for a slice of rural historic England (but with easy access to London), we fit the bill perfectly.

More about us

  1. The house and grounds take a bit of looking after but we would not want to live anywhere else

  2. We are a family of five: father is a lawyer (keen cricketer and pretends to be a farmer in his tractor), mother was a museum art restorer, now looks after our three children (11, 9 and 6) and runs the house.

  3. Looking for one or two week swaps during school holidays. Anything stylish.
