About our home

Do you live in New York with easy access to Manhattan? If so we would like to swap homes with you over Christmas and New Year 2014-15:
We have a typical English home, with clean fresh and contemporary decor, situated in a semi-rural village called Fair Oak close to the historic city of Winchester, (the old capital of England) with its famous Cathedral, where King Arthurs Round Table is still situated and beautiful historic buildings. Winchester offers some excellent restaurants by world famous chef’s Raymond Blanc, Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fernley-Whittingstall. There is a fantastic Christmas market offering local produce and products.
We are within easy access of Southampton with its busy dockyard. Bournemouth is a short train ride away and boasts some of the best beaches in the south of England and also has a lovely Christmas market. Bournemouth offer great night-life and restaurants.
Portsmouth to the east has plenty of navy history including the HMS Victory (which is a fully restored galleon ship used in the Battle of Trafalgar that you can tour round) and Mary Rose Visitor centre. There is a fantastic outlet shopping centre called Gunwharf where you can go up the Spinnaker Tower, a 170metre high landmark that has a viewing platform which enables you to see all of Portsmouth and beyond and, if you are feeling daring, a glass floor looking down.
London is just a short train ride away, where you can experience all the capital has to offer including excellent restaurants, free museums, Buckingham Palace, The Tower of London, see changing of the guard and many other world famous landmarks; alternatively you could visit the West End and a show, something we do on a regular basis. At New Year London always hosts world class fireworks, centred around the London Eye (a huge ferris wheel opposite Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament) which is well worth a trip.
We are a short drive from the New Forest National Park which has some fantastic British woodland, deer, wildlife and country pubs. Our village also has a number of typical English pubs within walking distance with log fires, local ale and food.
The nearest train station is just a 5 min drive or a 25 min walk. Once there the train goes direct to all of the above locations. Alternatively we are just off a bus route that can take you to Winchester, Southampton or the train station. We are within easy access of the motorway which opens up travel to all the places listed above and within 2 hours to Bath, The Cotswolds, Jayne Austin country and Birmingham. Or explore the south coast with its rolling hills, stunning cliffs and Jurassic coastline.
There are shops locally, so whilst we will provide a stocked fridge and larder with basic supplies, additional fresh produce and food is only a minute away.
We will provide details of how to get to all of the above locations, or any other that you wish to visit.
Our home is an excellent base to explore all that the south of England has to offer and experience typical English life over the Christmas and New Year period.
