About our home

*Also looking for a swap or offering for points for about a week from 12 th to 26 th October

Our home is spacious and full of light with stunning views across the Pentland Firth to the Orkney Islands. We have a very big double height living/dining room with large windows. Willie is an artist and we have many of his pictures on the walls, along with antiques. The weather in Caithness can't be guaranteed, but we have a lovely fire to relax by! There is a king-sized master bedroom and two kids' rooms upstairs (one a cabin bed - with side and the other now has a London bus bunk bed) and a family bathroom. Downstairs we have just done up our 4th bedroom to be a multi-purpose room. It has a really comfy new double sofa-bed, tv and sliding patio doors. It has a shower room next to it.

We have plenty of kids' toys including bikes and a climbing frame and are happy to do a car swap. We have a large lawn and vegetable garden.

My parents live next door and if we were ever to travel with them, there is the possibility of including their house in the swap, too - they have a large double bedroom, a beautiful new conservatory/kitchen/diner and an upstairs living room with attached single bed/study.

Caithness has a lot to offer - we are just opposite the beautiful Orkney Islands - the ferry is just down the road and you can watch it arrive and depart every day from the living room window; there are also miles of quiet beaches, great surf and the gorgeous North West coast to explore, to name a few things. There are sea stacks, puffins in summer, the Queen Mother's Castle of Mey a few miles away. If you are lucky, you might (especially in Winter) get to see the famous Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) or some dolphins.

Where is it?

Neighbourhood

Thurso is a quiet little town with plenty of amenities. We are a 3 minute drive or a lovely 20 minute walk from town. Otherwise, there is countryside galore- you can find a beach all to yourself, birdwatch, walk on the coast or inland and enjoy our big skies and unpredictable Scottish weather!

Buzzy restaurants
Captain's Galley -award winning fish restaurant or Whaligoe cafe(nearer Wick), which does lovely med inspired food
Cool bars
Y-Not has live music quite often
Cozy cafés
Cardosi cafe in the centre of town does nice tray bakes. The Blue Door cafe has great American style pancakes. If you are prepared to travel for a couple of hours, there is a chocolate shop and cafe in Durness. The hot chocolate is worth the drive!
Retail therapy
There are lots of lovely little shops in Kirkwall if you go across to Orkney; in Thurso there are some good gift shops - Aurora, We Frame it.
Bit of culture
The Lyth Arts Centre is a small arts centre that has live music or drama and art exhibitions in an old schoolhouse seemingly in the middle of nowhere!
Walks in the park
Why restrict yourself to the park? There are all types of walks along cliffs, on beaches, through the woods at Dunnet, along the riverbank...
Spot of exercise
try surfing - Thurso hosts international competitions and has great surf . Or go for a puffin spotting walk!
Day tripping
Orkney is fantastic, or a day trip to the far north west coast to Durness past stunning beaches and Highland scenery.
