About our home

My terraced 2 bedroomed house has a large kitchen/diner downstairs, a downstairs toilet, a lounge with a gas fire and piano, and stairs leading up to the bedrooms and a shower room. (Initially built as a bathroom but the previous owner took out the bath and put in a shower with cubicle.)Earlier this year I had a new combi boiler installed. This provides instant hot water plus central heating when required. The sliding glass doors from the lounge lead to a small patio with a low brick wall at the end and gate through leading down to a small garden area and a stream. (The Mill Leat) Beyond the stream is a public footpath. Although very quiet and set in a 13 year old town-house development of 12 houses around a square, with carports and extra visitor parking, my house is only 5 minutes walk from the local shops in Ottery St.Mary

More about us

  1. I am a New Zealander who has lived in England for 25 years, 12 years as a primary teacher and 12 years as a postman. I'm due to retire in July 2011. Over these years I have returned to NZ to visit several times, sometimes with children, and usually only for a few weeks at a time. Now I shall have time to spend longer in the country of my birth and although I shall be visiting my sister and brothers in Christchurch, Taupo and Palmerston North I wouldn't want to impose myself for longer than a few days. During the 1970's I spent my 20's enjoying the city life of Wellington and am attracted back to my favourite city which is also central to many places including visits to Nelson where a friend lives, the Rangitikei where I was brought up on a sheep farm, and Greytown where we lived before departing for the UK in 1986.

My interests include modern jive/ceroc which I dance in Exeter and Exmouth (occasionally Axminster and Taunton) and distance running including the London Marathon last year and the Exeter Half Marathon several times. Also I do yoga, bellringing (at the local parish church) and enjoy walking with 2 local walking groups.

Where is it?

Ottery St. Mary is having a Sainsbury supermarket in the town centre due to be opening in October although there are the usual range of shops for a small town here, including bakers, cafes, grocery stores, butchers and DIY stores. Ottery has a large, centuries old parish church modeled on Exeter Cathedral, a large Garden Centre 3 kms out of town and the historic Tumbling Weir just downstream from my back garden. The M5 motorway is only 15 minutes drive away, with another 15 minutes drive into the heart of Exeter, with the usual city delights of shops, restaurants, galleries and museums and the "underground passages". The M5 provides easy access to Taunton, Bristol, Dartmoor and Exmoor. The seaside resorts of Sidmouth and Exmouth are only 20 minutes drive away. There are numerous footpaths and bridleways to walk in the countryside including the banks of the River Otter and the coastal path.
