“We had a fantastic week's stay and family time at Rachel's lovely home. In particular the location is a great spot, walking / cycling / kayak distance into the town centre, though the wonderful neighbourhood of Jericho where we enjoyed eclectic food and drink options, and great base to explore the city. The house was really comfortable, with each us able to find our own space. Kids particularly loved the cinema room complete with disco ball, and we enjoyed the amazing book collection, and garden which backs out onto the canal. The street itself is very quiet (minimal traffic) so we all slept really well. Great spot for local runs and walks too. Comms were excellent throughout, and Rachel's family is so warm, providing lovely welcome touches and updates throughout the week. Delighted they enjoyed our house too. A perfect swap experience. Thank you!”
Rachel's reviewsAs a host (10)
“Our weekend in Oxford, with ageing parents, was delightful. Rachel was so kind to give us the use of her house and garden which was just perfect.”
“It's difficult to know where to begin. Rachel, her husband, Yadvinder, and her dad Terry all contributed to our Oxford stay. Terry picked us (my daughter, my two granddaughters, and me) up at the London Heathrow Airport and drove us to Rachael's home in Oxford, helped us get settled in and was off. He went to great lengths to get me a rental car. (Evidently in the UK to get an 84-year-old Canadian a car to rent for a couple weeks is not easy.) As it turned out I decided against the car. The taxi service in the area is so reasonable and so prompt, I think we made the right decision: no parking problems, no problem driving on the "other" side of the road, no problem finding the destination, no problem having a drink, and no problem finding our way home. Plus my daughter and girls enjoyed exploring the area by foot. There is a lovely path along the canal that takes you right to the centre of town. Their residence is a renovated Victorian terrace home originally built around 1886. It has a beautiful back garden that runs down to the Oxford canal. This is quite a spectacular setting. We had many evenings at the water's edge decking - martinis & meze (Greek for hors-d'oeuvres) in hand. Within walking distance on Walton St. there are some quite good restaurants. Manos, a Greek restaurant and Deli, serves up outstanding Greek dishes, and just down the street is the Jericho Café where at eight in the morning my grandchildren and I had chocolate milkshakes, cappuccino and croissants. The Ashmolean Museum is a must see. It came into existence in 1682 when Elias Ashmole gifted his collection. It opened as Britain’s first public museum and the world’s first university museum. The Ashmolean houses the only soft tissue of the Dodo bird. A recent discovery – the specimen was evidently shot dead. They are calling it "A Murder most Fowl!" The reason for the family visiting Oxford in the first place was to involve my grandchildren, Marija and Petra (age 14), in our families search for a "Life after High School". Rachel, with I'm sure with the help of her husband Yadvinder who is a professor at Oriel College, arranged for a private guided tour of the facility. We have pictures of the girls in the college's dining halls where meals have been taken for nearly 700 years. Rachel, you're the best. This was the highlight of our families Oxford adventure. Thank you. Cheers Peter ”
“An absolutely stunning swap experience! Rachel was the best — you couldn't hope to meet a nicer, more considerate family; they greeted us and helped us settle in, we had the chance to chat to them all...and we actually didn't want them to leave! We were lucky enough to spend Christmas in their beautiful home, and there was a beautifully decorated christmas tree all lit up for us, as well as a very generous hamper too. The house itself is spacious, comfortable and clearly a much loved home to a very well travelled family. The garden was lovely too, and stops right at the water's edge so you can watch canal houseboats drifting by. A terrific location too, with all of Oxford's myriad attractions with an easy walk. Thank you so much – we hope very much to return one day.”
“Rachel and family were the most welcoming hosts. We were made to feel right at home. Their home was an absolute delight, all bits of it. Cant think of a better place to explore this gorgeous city. We hope to do many exchanges with them in the future! ”
“Brilliantly located house in Oxford. Super clean, fabulous host and the canoe was a hugely fun bonus! We hope to swap again! Highly recommend.”
“A lovely, comfortable, well equipped home in a lovely location. Also within comfortable walking distance of the city centre. Evening meals by the canal were a major bonus and the ducks were well fed. On our last evening 2 swans brought their 5 cygnets up to say hello. One of those occasions that have made this swap so memorable. ”
“We had a wonderful stay in Rachel and family's house in Oxford. Centrally located for access to the city it was easy to walk everywhere, even with children aged 4 and 6 in tow. The house was very comfortable indeed, well equipped for family activities - games etc. and for cooking: Rachel had gone the extra mile in preparing an "instruction book" for the house and for visiting the city as well as welcome Easter eggs for the boys. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend staying at Rachel's house.”
“We spent a special Christmas and New Year in Oxford. Rachel and her family went out of their way to ensure we had a wonderful stay and we all appreciated the beautiful Christmas tree and numerous treats they left for us. The house was comfortable, warm and welcoming. We especially loved the open fire and the home cinema in the basement. The location was perfect, a quiet street in an interesting area, with shops, pubs and restaurants close by. It was a great base from which to explore the city and also to take long walks along the canal and river. Apart from supermarket shopping we didn't use the car at all whilst we were there. It was a real privilege to meet Rachel and her family and to stay in their lovely home. We hope to welcome them to our place one day.”
“We loved staying at Rachel's home. The house is centrally located in Oxford, and Rachel went our of her way to make sure we were comfortable. Highly recommended!”
