“We had a most wonderful time at the house of this family. The location is perfect: walk distance to the beach and all facilities such as bakery, supermarket and nice restaurants. The property was very well maintained and clean ! Great to stay here with kids. Communication with Hilary was perfect: kind and most helpful. Kent is a beautiful part of England, lots to do and to see or to relax. Whatever you want. The looked after our house as it was their one, lovely to be a part of this exchange and coming back to our own house. ( very clean as well again!) ”
Where is it?
Whitstable is a beautiful coastal town, full of little alleyways, beach huts, pubs and clapboard-clad fishermans' cottages. The busy harbour with its fishing boats and whelk and oyster stalls is a popular attraction and the beautiful pebble beach is perfect for crabbing and sea-combing. There are nice walks along to Tankerton and Seasalter or sit and watch the sunset over the sea from the famous Neptune pub. The High Street has a bohemian charm with independent craft shops, galleries, delicatessens and boutiques trading side-by-side with butchers, greengrocers and bakeries selling local produce. There are some excellent restaurants from those with Michelin stars to excellent tapas and wonderful fish restaurants. There is plenty to amuse the children: sailing, cycling and lovely parks.
Margate and Thanet: Further along the east Kent coast is Margate with sandy beaches and the new Turner gallery. Margate has a retro feel with plenty of vintage shops and the new theme park Dreamland.
Canterbury: A fantastic medieval city with cobbled streets and an amazing cathedral. It is just seven miles away and there's even an off-road cycle path from Whitstable along the old railway line.
There are wildlife parks, zoos and impressive castles (e.g. Dover) to explore. Enjoy picking fruit in Kent's many orchards or walking over the Downs.
And if there's not enough for you in Kent, there's always London. Whitstable has direct trains to London St Pancras (1 hr 16) and London Victoria (1 hr 30) and the station is just 5 minutes from our house.
