About our home

Our beautiful barn sits on the outskirts of a pretty village. We live on the edge of Winchester - a historic city about 60 miles south of London. London is an easy 1 hour train journey - perfect for a day trip then back for some peace and quiet!

The New Forest National Park is 20 miles to the west, where ponies and cattle roam freely - a great place for cycling (bike hire available), walking, horse riding and picnics.

The ancient stone circles at Stonehenge (3100 BC) and Avebury (2600 BC) are within an hour's drive. You can reach the historic cities of Oxford, Salisbury, Chichester and Bath for a day trip. Longleat Safari Park and Legoland at Windsor can also be easily reached for a day trip.

There are several stately homes nearby including Montacute House and Mottisfont Abbey (which has the national rose collection) as well as Jane Austen's home at Chawton. We are also just 25 minutes away from Highclere Castle, the location for the very popular TV drama Downton Abbey. If you want to visit the beach you can go to Sandbanks near Bournemouth or our favourite which is West Wittering, near historic Chichester.

For younger guests, Nelson's Flag Ship HMS Victory (1759), King Henry VIII's flag ship the Mary Rose and HMS Warrior are at the naval dockyard in Portsmouth - 45 mins away. There is also a climbing wall, interactive area for children / teenagers and a boat trip around Portsmouth harbour to see the warships.

The new Harry Potter studio tour is just over an hour away and a must for any Harry Potter fans - see the Hogwarts film sets and find out about the special effects used in the movies.

There are two fantastic high-wire tree-top adventures nearby Go-Ape and Tree-Runners. They have zip-wires, rope bridges and tree-top walkways. If you like heights then you'll love it! Winchester also has a great 'hands on' interactive science and technology attraction - Intech - aimed at families, with a a large Planetarium. Paulton's Park is an adventure / theme park for children is half an hour away and we also have Marwell Zoo just up the road which is internationally renowned for its conservation work.

Winchester's historic city centre has a good range of shops and restaurants - including Raymond Blanc's "Brasserie Blanc". Our beautiful Cathedral is 1000 years old and after shopping in the lovely old high street, you can have a picnic lunch in the grounds of the Cathedral. You can walk around the back of the Cathedral to the famous Winchester College and walk along the ancient water meadows and have lunch in the Wykeham Arms. For further information please see www.visitwinchester.co.uk

We finished converting and extending our barn last year to create a stunning home finished to a very high specification and filmed for a self-build documentary. Each room is unique, with snug seating areas and large family spaces to suit your mood. There's a cinema room for film nights and underfloor heating for cosy toes!

We would love to visit Vancouver or Vancouver Island this summer (2013), so please get in touch if you have a home in the area. For 2014 it would be great to find a swap near Orlando but we are open to other locations.

Buzzy restaurants
El Sabio is a fantastic tapas bar. Other favourites include the Wykeham Arms, a very famous pub next to the Cathedral and Winchester College, and the Hotel du Vin. For a very special evening, walk to Lainston House and treat yourself to cocktails on the terrace. Even closer to home is our local pub, they serve award winning food and there's a great garden for children.
Cool bars
If you love wine they try the Black Bottle. There's a white room and a red room, you just buy a card and then use a touch screen dispenser to select one of 120 wines, chilled to the perfect temperature.
Cozy cafés
In Winchester try Ginger Two or the Bridge Patisserie for yummy cakes.
Retail therapy
Alresford is a very attractive market down, great for unique shops and there's a fantastic deli. Make sure you pop into Long Barn, where they grow and distill lavender. Stockbridge is also a great place to spend a morning or afternoon and they often have great markets. For a more intense shopping experience head for Southampton or the newly developed Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth.
Bit of culture
Winchester has a gorgeous cinema and an excellent Theatre. Children will love Marwell Zoo, the Watercress steamtrain line, the Army Air Corps museum, InTech, with an amazing planetarium, and the Hawk Conservancy. If you love music then Grange Park Opera offers a once in a lifetime experience.
Walks in the park
There are lovely walks straight from the door of our home. For a longer walk head to Farley's Mount, a beautiful country park perfect for kite flying, picnics and adventures.
Spot of exercise
There's a great Leisure Centre in Winchester (Hugh Jackman popped in recently - that caused a stir!). Head for the New Forest for sailing, cycling and geocaching.
Day tripping
London, the New Forest and Porstmouth are all within an hour's drive. Chawton, home of Jane Austen is also a very special place, it's only 40 minutes away but pop into Alresford on the way back to make a memorable day out.
