“After staying at Rory and Serge\'s home for 3 weeks in July 2017 we felt sad when it was time to leave. On arrival, we were greeted by a street garden full of Serge\'s roses in bloom and a lemon tree at the entrance gate. Upon opening the door & throughout our stay, we felt immediately at home thanks to the lovely welcoming note, the sun streaming in the family room (our favourite room), an immaculately clean and comfortable house with a chef\'s kitchen you can only dream of (thanks Serge) already thoughtfully stocked with some supplies, an easy to read house manual with some great local recommendations and a neighbourhood so quiet at night you could hear a pin drop! Being first time visitors to San Francisco "our home" was in a perfect location being away from the hustle and bustle of the city yet easy enough to walk or catch a bus to the local station for the short ride into the city. From the start, our communication with Rory and Serge has been so friendly, easy and efficient, in all a very happy and memorable start to our travels in the States. We look forward to hosting Rory and Serge at our home in Sydney later this year. Kathy & Greg Sydney”

About our home
Four generations of our family have lived in this two-story Leola Hall home, which is an ideal place for one or two couples to stay. We have added a family room which spans the back of the house and has an upright piano, comfortable leather swivel chairs, and a new flat-screen television. The living room is a wonderful place to enjoy the morning sun and to read in the evenings. The house retains the original wood panels, oak floors and fireplace. We have collected furniture from the early 1900's for our living and dining rooms and have an extensive collection of books and CD's to share with you. The kitchen, home to a professional chef, has an international collection of cooking and wine books, as well as equipment galore, including a professional espresso machine. The kitchen and bathrooms have been updated recently to provide modern conveniences, and the beds in both bedrooms are also recent. Our home has Wi-fi, a copier/printer, and a DVD player. There is no air conditioning, because it is not necessary in our mild climate.
In addition, we have a small stone house in southwest France, built in the 19th century but updated in the 21st. It is located between the medieval town of Sarlat and Montignac, home of the Lascaux caves. It sleeps one couple in the mezzanine area and is about 70 square meters in size. We've provided a few pictures and can give you more information if you are interested in exchanging with this property.

Rory And Serge's reviews
As a host (2)“From the moment you make contact with Rory and Serge you are invited into their home (even before arriving) with such warmth and grace. We stayed in this wonderful home and Berkeley village Oct 2016 for 3 weeks. Rory and Serge before arriving sent us their house manual and all sorts of wonderful advice of local delights and sights as well as San Francisco \'not to be missed\' treats. With their guidance and local knowledge, this meant we felt like a local as soon as we arrived in Berkeley Village, from the best breakfast place to the AMAZING ice cream at Smitten.... Their home is a treasure trove of family history and you really feel you are part of a home, not an impersonal hotel. From the amazing chef\'s kitchen to the wonderful master bedroom and ensuite, not to mention the family room, dining area and so much more! The wonderful arrival treats were such a delight and surprise. Their home is centrally located not only for the wonderful village of Berkeley and all the amazing shops, restaurants, bookstores (Mrs Dalloway you cannot miss), but it is only a 20 min BART (train) to the centre of San Francisco. If you want a perfect home away from home - this is the place to be! (ps we came home to Sydney and Serge had left us the most amazing home cooked treats - WOW a French chef in our home did that for us and they were world class!) More about us
-
We are a retired couple: a chef from France (husband) and a high-school administrator (wife) who is a native Berkeleyan. We have a son who lives around the corner from us with his wife and young daughter. He is always willing to help out in our absence. Our other son lives in Australia with his wife and baby son. Their apartment in Sydney is small, so we are interested in finding a place to stay for our annual visits. We live part-time in the south of France and also like to spend time in Paris and to travel around Europe when possible. Because we spend a good portion of the year away from Berkeley, an exchange does not need to be simultaneous.

Where is it?
Neighbourhood
We are located in the charming Elmwood area of Berkeley, ten blocks from the University of California. We are two blocks from shopping and public transportation - buses - which can take you to our subway system (BART) and into San Francisco, a twenty-minute ride. The University offers museums, concerts, libraries, a botanical garden and a multitude of other cultural and educational experiences, as well as acres of open space. The city of Berkeley also offers internationally-recognized restaurants, theater, night clubs, cafes, shopping, an aquatic park, and - of course - proximity to San Francisco and to the wine regions of Sonoma and Napa. Although it rains occasionally, the temperature remains mild most of the year, so it is always lovely to visit and to enjoy the out-of-doors.
