About our home

Our home is a cozy place, modest compared to many new American houses but plenty for the four of us, with great flow for entertaining!

The ground floor: small parlor, dining room, large bright kitchen (recently renovated)with desk area. This is the oldest part of the house, built about 110 years ago with big exposed beams, wood paneling and working fireplace.

Also downstairs: a small study with WC and very large family room/playroom with cable TV and stereo, opening out onto brick patio with gas grill, small fenced yard with children's play structure, herb garden and very friendly neighbors.

Second floor: a large open hall with two dormer windows with windowseats--used as a sewing/ project room now--and bathroom with tub and shower, also newly renovated two years ago.

Also upstairs: large main bedroom, 5 windows, bright and peaceful, small desk and TV; first
smaller bedroom, recently "made over" as a very pretty treehouse room for our daughter for a TV
program! And second smaller bedroom with our son's toddler bed plus double bed for guests.

Overall the house is on the rustic side, not grand or glamorous, but cottagey in feel--ceilings are on the low side. We treat our things well, but we believe that a home is for living in, not only for showing off, so nothing here is very expensive or fancy. Instead
we favor color and sunlight and warmth. We invite you to enjoy it!

More about us

  1. As for ourselves, we are a family with two mamas, Heidi and Fiona. Heidi is a school-teacher and a poet with one book already published (see Fiona works for the global consulting firm Accenture and speaks fluent French. Indeed, both Fiona's brother and father are now married to French women (one in Lille, one in Courchevel) and her mother owns a house in Nyons. You see why we want to live in Paris for a time! Our two children are a girl, 7, and a boy, 4--very typical kids, carefully brought up.

Where is it?

Bethesda is best described as a "little city," with office buildings, shopping and 250 restaurants, and only 5 miles to the White House
--20 minutes on the Metro.

Our neighborhood is residential, but our street, though tree-lined and only two lanes, is quite busy at rush hour. Bus stops are directly outside our house and there are two playgrounds/ parks nearby with tennis courts. To walk into
the center of Bethesda is 20-30 minutes; to cycle is 10 minutes.

Because of proximity to the National Institutes of Health, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, Bethesda is a very international community. The French International School is nearby and in our daughter's state school are dozens of French families as well as from all over the world.
