About our home

My light filled apartment is centrally located in a quiet Chicago neighborhood but close to many fine restaurants, bars, parks. Buses and trains to any area of the city are close by. The Loop is only 20 minutes away by El train. The neighborhood is friendly with a vibrant street life. I have a lovely Japanese influenced garden which is overlooked from the back room. Much of the decor is Japanese influenced and rather simple in style. There is a southern facing living room, a music room with piano, an office separated by a screen from the bedroom, a large kitchen, one bathroom, summer room with garden view. The basement contains a washer and dryer. WiFi is available. If you drive, street parking is free and always available directly in front of the house.

More about us

  1. I am a classical musician by profession but now retired from singing, conducting, coaching and teaching but still active as a composer. Born in the state of Kentucky, I have lived in Chicago since 1973. My loves are Japanese gardening, Japanese design, theater, classical concerts, opera, nature, architecture, art museums, travel, reading, languages, friends. I am single man. In traveling I prefer to settle in one place for while and absorb the culture within the environs. I like Chicago for its vital artistic life, its excellent and varied restaurants, its stunning architecture, its beautiful miles of park on the shores of Lake Michigan.

  2. I am rather introverted but at the same time like to meet new people of similar tastes and philosophies. I am interested especially in European culture, history and languages. Currently my focus is on France and want to improve my French while there.

  3. Classical music is my passion.

Neighbourhood

The neighborhood is called Bucktown/Wicker Park and is one of the liveliest, most popular areas of the city with many ethnic restaurants, cafes, music clubs, artists galleries, small theaters, small boutiques. Buses and trains make it easy to navigate. The Loop or Lake Michigan beaches are only 30 minutes away by public transportation. Traveling by car cuts the time in half. A former elevated rail track only 5 blocks away has been converted to a 3 mile park called "The 606" for walking, biking and running. There are several small relaxing parks to enjoy. In the summer there is a large outdoor Chicago Park District swimming pool 3 blocks from my house. The city is like an architectural museum, with numerous styles ranging from turn of the 19th century to the avant-garde. The sky-scraper was born here! Frank Lloyd Wright buildings are in abundance as well as those of Louis Sullivan, Helmut Jahn, Jean Gang and Mies van der Rohe. The Chicago Art Institute is hone to a large and varied collection. The Lyric Opera offers world class productions conducted by Sir Andrew Davis and the Chicago Symphony is one of the world’s best under the leadership of Riccardo Muti. Stroll the miles of gorgeous lakefront or swim and sunbathe on wide sandy beaches. The Magnificent Mile downtown is a shopper’s paradise. Millenium Park in the Loop is a very popular venue featuring Frank Gehry’s stunning Pritzker Pavilion where one may attend free summer music festivals of classical, jazz, gospel and blues Sir Anish Kapoor's Cloudgate sculpture. commonly called The Bean. Fine theaters are plenteous through the city presenting a wide range of plays and musicals; Chicago Shakespeare Company, Goodman Theater, Steppenwolf Theater, Court Theater, Victory Gardens are among the best known for drama while many others present Broadway musicals. Baseball, basketball, football and hockey games are abundant. Riverboat cruises on the Chicago River and on Lake Michigan are a favorite tourist attraction.
