Our vacation home is located in a small subdivision of homes 10 miles north of Cortez Colorado. Our home, like every home in the subdivision, has three acres of land. Most of the land is open but there is also a wooded area with shrubs and cacti on a knoll that is about an acre in size.
The house has two floors. On the main upper floor, there is a large living/dining area with large windows on two sides that look out to mesas and mountains. In addition to the kitchen, there's a full bath and a bedroom with twin beds. The kitchen has all the the typical conveniences except the dishwasher, which is human. There is a balcony around two sides of the house.
There is a large, open living area on the lower level, as well as a bathroom that has a shower, and two bedrooms, both with queen size beds.
The house is about 1800 square feet. The furniture is new and the home has been very well cared for. It looks out on the mesas of Mesa Verde, and the peaks of the usually snow covered Rockies to the east are visible from the front yard.
The home is situated in the Four Corners area--near the intersection of the states of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. The scenery all around is spectacular. The entrance to Mesa Verde National Park, with its world famous cliff dwellings, is 15 miles away. The entire area is filled with Native American sites and ruins. The Anasazi Cultural Center is a mile away. The San Juan Range of the Rocky Mountains, with many14,000 foot peaks, is a half hour north east. An hour to the west begins Utah's grand canyon country. The Needles section of Canyonlands National Park is an hour and half from the house. Moab, Utah, 4 wheel drive heaven, is two hours away. So is Arches National Park.
If you are interested in exploring Native American ruins, this is the place to do it. Our home is within a few hours drive of Canyon de Chelly in Arizona, and Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. "Canyon of the Ancients" which has more archeological sites than any other place in North America, is fifteen minutes from our home. (There are few trails in it; you explore on your own.)
The world class ski resort town of Telluride (where Oprah has a home) is an hour and half drive away on a fabulous mountain road. There is also skiing at Durango ski resort, also about an hour and half away. There are innumerable hiking trails throughout the mountains.
We have excellent maps and guides for local adventures which you will be welcome to use.
There are good restaurants all about us. All conveniences can be found in the town of Cortez, which is about 12 miles away. The small town of Dolores has a beautiful little library with wonderful internet service.
If you wanting bustling city life, this isn't the place for you. If you're drawn to spectacular scenery of all sorts--pine trees and red rock, canyons, mountains and rivers, this is a place you'll love.
We've prepared a lengthy "Guide for Visitors" that we'll be happy to send to anyone who is interested.
My wife and I are recently retired. I taught philosophy at a state university in Maryland for 37 years, and continue to read and write. My wife Cathy was a social worker for many years. We still maintain a residence on the eastern shore of Maryland so we can see family and friends. But our hearts are at our Colorado residence.
