About our home

Hi, my name is Kristen, and I'd like to give you a tour of my grandma and grandpa's house on Jekyll Island, GA. They tell me they are looking to travel some more and hope to trade homes with someone for a little bit. I suggested they trade with my parent's house in upstate New York so I can spend a little more time down there but they pretended not to hear me.

Just a short walk from the beach, this one-story, brick ranch is perfect for those looking for a little privacy with easy access to anywhere on the Island. The house itself is beautiful, comfortable, and very clean. I'll try to describe it to you.

Let's walk through the front door (be sure to wipe your shoes). To the right is the family room with a piano, couch, and chair. There's even a little end table my dad made that has a glass top with a really big shark tooth on display. A small library sits at the end and is where many a family checker competitions have taken place.

To the left is where my family sleeps when we visit. There are two bedrooms in this part of the house. There is a master bedroom with a queen bed and full bath, a room with two twin beds, and another full bath down the hall. There is also an office with a printer for you to connect your laptop to if needed.

Straight ahead, you'll see the dining room with a table that seats eight. Grandpa usually sits at the end of the table and picks his teeth. There is a gas fireplace in the room and a hutch with a bowl of Peppermint Patties. To the right of the dining room is the kitchen, newly remodeled and beautiful.

Now let's move to the back of the house. That's where my grandpa makes art, he's a potter. Next to his pottery studio is the window-lined living room with a flat screen TV, gas fireplace, and a small table to eat your breakfast on. Then there's the walk-in pantry, and beyond that is the laundry room. There's a full bath in there too, connected to the two-car garage (that's where Grandma sends my brother and me when we come back from the beach to wash the sand off our feet).

My grandparent's suite (er, bedroom) has a queen bed, full bath with his and her sinks, TV, and French doors leading to a patio that looks out onto a fenced-in garden. Next to the garden is a shed, which is where you'll find three bicycles that you can use to explore the Island. If you're adventurous, you take can the bike path to see a couple of alligators swimming in a pond.

Yup, it's a pretty nice place. I love it there, and I know you will too. But remember, it's just temporary. I need my grandma and grandpa back eventually.

More about us

  1. The only thing better than Jekyll Island and the house at 7 Hyde Avenue are its owners, who have lived on the Island for 19 years. My grandparents, David and Shirley, are retired and enjoy the freedom retirement allows, but stay busy. Their passion? Traveling, of course. They have been to at least 12 countries and sometimes even take us along on their trips. They raised their family in Ithaca, NY, where my grandpa was a Sr. Vice President at a bank and my grandma was an RN, working in several different fields of nursing. They have five children, 19 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one adorable dog; an Aussie named Elizabeth. Who wouldn't want to trade lives with them for a few months?

Where is it?

If you don’t fall in love with Jekyll Island, you have no heart. Seven miles long and two miles wide, the Island is about six miles from the mainland (there is a bridge -- you don’t have to swim) and sits just between Savannah, GA, and Jacksonville, FL, airports.

Idyllic yet bustling, Jekyll Island is the perfect vacation spot for all ages. My family has done everything from seining, kayaking, and golfing, to relaxing on the beach and catching up on the back patio. The Island also offers tennis, soccer, marsh eco-tours, dolphin-watching, sea turtle walks, and bird-watching. Let’s not forget Summer Waves – the 11-acre water park which includes six water slides, wave pool, lazy river, splash zone, and kiddie area – and my favorite place on the Island. The National Historic Landmark District is where you’ll find the old “cottages” of men such as J.P. Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer, William K. Vanderbilt, and others – all former members of the Jekyll Island Club, which is still standing (and making mean chicken clubs). While in the Historic District, you’ll have to stop at the Fudge Shoppe and the book store. There are other gift shops there, as well. Also on the Island are Baptist, Catholic, Episcopal, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches for the religious.

On Hyde Avenue, you will find friendly and helpful neighbors – my grandparents’ friends. For even more information on Jekyll Island itself, please visit www.jekyllisland.com. “On Jekyll Island, It’s All Good!”
