About our home

Are you curious about Portland? Publications as diverse as the New York Times, Economist, Weekly Standard, National Geographic, Smithsonian, and Sydney Morning Herald have praised Portland as a "city that gets almost everything right." Our suburban home is located 15 minutes from downtown Portland on a 0.5-acre hillside lot surrounded by towering trees with beautiful views of the surrounding area. We have a private back yard with a large deck and in-ground pool. The deck has a gas barbeque and patio table for relaxing and enjoying meals. Inside, our house has an open floor plan with vaulted ceilings and extensive windows to enjoy the views. We have three bedrooms and baths, den, gas and wood-burning fireplaces, and laundry room with washer and dryer. The kitchen is fully equipped with oven, microwave, dishwasher, etc. We have two Macintosh computers with high-speed Internet access, 3 TVs on cable, a surround-sound stereo system, and fax machine. We have available for your use several bikes and a couple sets of golf clubs. In addition, we have camping gear and a canoe that you are welcome to use. While our home is only minutes from downtown Portland, a personal auto is required. Fortunately, driving in our area is relatively easy and parking is inexpensive, even in downtown Portland.

More about us

  1. We are Terry and Barbara. Terry is a Civil Engineer who serves as the City Engineer for a suburban Portland city. Barbara is a family law Attorney. We are in our early-60s, love the outdoors, enjoy cooking, reading, and live theatre. Our children are all grown and live on their own. We do not smoke and ask that others not smoke in our home. We have done two home exchanges: London-2008 and Switzerland/Paris-2009. We greatly enjoyed both experiences, especially since they allowed us to stay in neighborhoods and meet local people. In the future we are looking to experience new areas, as well as areas we have grown to love. Some areas high on our list include: Netherlands, France, Italy, Scandinavia, Scotland, Ireland, Chili, Costa Rica, New Zealand, and Australia. In addition, we are always interested in short breaks (10 days or less) in the US and Canada.

Where is it?

Our home is located in the community of Lake Oswego, an upscale suburb 15 minutes from downtown Portland. Lake Oswego's quaint downtown offers a number of interesting stores (Oregon has no sales tax meaning shopping is tax-free) and restaurants, a delightful farmer's market, and outdoor music concerts. Portland's food and restaurant scene is highly rated by numerous publications including the New York Times and Travel + Leisure magazine. The city brews some of the best and most diverse beers in the world and has more brewpubs than any other city. Portland is also the center of a premier wine-growing region specializing in Pinot Noirs. Many wineries are open for tours during the summer. The weather during the summer and fall is delightful. The high temperature during the summer generally ranges from the mid-70s (24 C) to low 90s (33 C), the humidity is very low, and rainfall is typically less than 1 inch (2.5 cm) per month. Outdoor recreation is plentiful and includes hiking, golf, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, skiing in both summer and winter, rock climbing, world-class windsurfing, fishing, and boating. Located near Portland are the Columbia River Gorge (45 minutes), Mt. Hood (60 minutes), and the Oregon Coast (90 minutes). Other nearby cities include Seattle (3 hours by car) and Vancouver, Canada (5.5 hours by car or one hour by plane). Portland can be reached directly from Europe with non-stop flights from Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Reykjavik.
