About our home

Thank you for looking at our listing on this website. There are three important things you should keep in mind about our vacation home before reading further. First, this house is for ADULTS ONLY. If you are traveling as a family with children (under age 18), we cannot accommodate you. Second, this vacation house is located far from our primary residence and it is located in a private residential community, not open to the public. It is used frequently by people just like you. Therefore, you must interact with a company that cleans our beach house before and after your visit, provides keys to you, tags for your automobile so that you can drive and park on the private roads and personal identity cards so that you can use the swimming pools, tennis courts, hiking or biking trails and other amenities at The Sea Ranch. There is a fee collected by the management company for its services (most of it related to cleaning), usually about $200 (U.S.) but it can be slightly more or less depending on the extent of the services provided to you. You pay the management company directly. Finally, if you are not familiar with the geography of California, this house is NOT located in an area of California that is convenient to any of the main tourist attractions California has to offer. The driving time ONE WAY to San Francisco is three hours; to Napa Valley, a very difficult three hours; to Yosemite Valley is eight hours; to Lake Tahoe is seven hours; to Carmel is eight hours; and to Disneyland is twelve hours. If you are visiting California to see some or all of the main tourist sites, this is NOT an appropriate location to use as a base. People visit The Sea Ranch to get as far away as possible from California's tourist attractions and population centers. And one last thing, the ocean temperature is 48 - 52 F. all year; it is not suitable for swimming.

Our vacation home is in the heart of a ten-mile-long section of the California coastline known as The Sea Ranch, located approximately 125 miles north of San Francisco and 40 miles south of the town of Mendocino. The Sea Ranch is a private community of almost 1,900 homes, many of which were designed by famous contemporary American architects, and it is often described as the birthplace of "California architecture." Our home was one of the original homes built there. It was designed by William Turnbull, who later redesigned it for us to take further advantage of the stunning panoramic and long coastal views afforded by its site location. The renovation was completed in 2012 and our house was subsequently chosen for inclusion in an architecture book published in 2013 entitled The Sea Ranch: Fifty Years of Architecture, Landscape, Place and Community on the Northern California Coast .

The original, overarching concept for The Sea Ranch, still vigorously supported by its homeowners, was to integrate architecture and nature as closely as possible. Certainly that has been achieved at our home from which one can observe all manner of wildlife in the ocean and the air and on the land, at any time and on any day. For those who prefer vigorous activity, there are dozens of miles of hiking and biking trails along the coastal bluffs and beaches, and in the forests covering the nearby hillsides. Tennis and swimming are only a short walk away; additional tennis courts, swimming pools, equestrian stables and a public golf course are located within the community and require only a short drive. An excellent restaurant is within easy walking distance along a beachside trail.

Our home provides a comfortable, modern setting for dining indoors or outdoors. Try a luncheon in our garden which we have cultivated for over 25 years or dine while watching an ocean sunset from our spacious deck or in the indoor dining area with floor to ceiling glass. Or, just relax with a glass of wine and a book in front of one or our fireplaces while enjoying the same view. You will find that it is one of the most wonderful settings in the world to enjoy.
