About our home

We live in a 2 story house built in 1908 (relatively old for this part of the USA!). It has many lovely features, such as high ceilings, crown molding, hardwood floors & pocket doors. The downstairs is flooded with light, the entry foyer leads into both the dining room and living rooms. There is one wall of windows(south-facing) in the dining room and 3 tall light-gathering leaded glass windows in the living room. The living room has a grand piano. We have a very sunny, cheerful eat-in kitchen with french doors leading to a deck with arbor. There is also a bathroom off the kitchen. The stairway leads to the 3 bedrooms upstairs, each with large walk-in closets (in fact our son is using his walk-in closet as his bedroom - his main room being his study - if needed, another bed can be added to this room). The Victorian style bathroom upstairs has a claw foot tub, pedestal sink, Victorian built-in cabinet, and a laundry chute. We just remodeled our basement, which has a family room with futon (sleeps 2) and large flat-screen TV; a bathroom and a study.

We also have a 30-ft sailboat available for use (experienced sailors only), which can sleep up to 6.

More about us

  1. We are Julan (classical musician - pianist), David (software manager), both in our early fifties, and Julian (16 yr old son). We also have a dog who can stay or leave. We enjoy entertaining friends with food, reading, sailing, hiking, going to art galleries, and attending concerts/plays. We just had our first house exchange 2 summers ago with a family in Paris! It was a great success. We hope this is the beginning of a new way of travelling around the world!!
This winter, we are planning on celebrating Xmas in the NYC area. My 85 year old mother who lives in Scarsdale, Westchester, is also celebrating her 85th birthday. It is difficult for her to have house guests so that is why we are looking for a house exchange. Although we will be gone from Seattle for close to 2 weeks, we will only be in the NYC area for 3 or 4 days around Xmas, after which time we will be travelling up to upstate NY and returning to Seattle on the 5th of Jan from Syracuse, NY. So we need a house exchange in the greater NYC metropolitan area for only 3 or 4 days. Of course, you will be staying at our house for the entire 2 weeks.

Where is it?

The house is located in the Ravenna neighborhood, on a chestnut tree-lined boulevard. It is within walking distance of a local organic farmers market, a beautiful ravine/park, Greenlake (a popular lake for walkers), the Burke-Gilman bike trail, Meany Concert Hall and the Burke Museum (on the campus of the University of Washington), University Village (outdoor mall with some very fine shops, restaurants and cafes), and some great art-film movie houses/theatres. It is also about a 10 minute drive to downtown Seattle, where there are museums, restaurants, markets, theatres, shops. The city is located on Puget Sound, with the Olympic Mtns to the west and the Cascade Mtns to the east. It is a nature-lover's haven, great hikes, wonderful boating, right by the ocean and close to whale-watching. The beautiful San Juan Islands are 1 1/2 hrs drive NW and Vancouver, BC is a 3 hr drive N. There are great wineries and breweries in the region. For winter visitors, there is great downhill and cross-country skiing at Snoqualmie Summit, Stevens Pass, Crystal Mountain and Mt. Baker.
