This 2 bedroom, 2 bath cottage is on a wooded 1/2 acre in Southampton, Long island, New York, one of the famous "Hamptons," an international resort area, 2 hours outside of New York City. The house is 2 miles from charming Southampton Village and close to fabulous ocean and bay beaches. There are other beautiful New England style towns nearby, fishing villages, vineyards, great restaurants, art galleries, boutiques, etc.
You will need a car to tour the area. If you want to go into New York City, there is an hourly bus service or a railroad (2 - 2 1/2 hours). There is also a ferry service that makes it easy to take your car to New England (Rhode Island, Boston, etc)
The house has a fully-equipped kitchen, a dishwasher, clothing washer/dryer, window air conditioners(you won't need them off-season), linen and towels. Each of the two bedrooms has a double (matrimonial) bed. There are two decks outside.
This is a second home of ours...we live nearby in a larger home. Every summer this house is rented for the summer season, so the house will be available only "off-season"...September 15, 2007 through May 15, 2008 for any length of time. Actually the Fall and Spring are the best times of year here, good weather and fewer crowds (in the summer the area is very popular and full of rrenters and tourists)
We want to exchange our house for an apartment in central Venice, Italy. The apartment should have a good kitchen with a stove with at least 4 burners (bruciatori) and a "real" oven, not just a microwave. For a minimum of 2 weeks...any time of the year. The exchange does not have to be simultaneous.
The house is on a private road surrounded by woods and is very quiet. There are nature trails nearby. Walking on the nearby ocean and bay beaches is one of our favorite activities. The other "Hamptons" towns, all nearby, are very charming and have many old (for America) typical shingle houses and tree-lined streets. It looks entirely different than Italy!
At the far eastern tip of Long island, you will find Montauk Point (30 miles from Southampton) which is a famous fishing town. you can go out on fishing boats from there every day (and bring your fish home and cook it!) Long Island is famous for its wines and there are also many local vineyards in an area called the "North Fork" ( 30-40 minutes by car). All of these vineyards give tours and tastings. In the autumn there are many farm stands that sell local produce. For shopping (clothing, linen, etc) there is a giant "Discount Mall" called Tanger with hundreds of "outlet" stores. It is alos 30 minutes away.
We are a couple in our 60's my husband is a retired metallurgist, I am a freelance advertising designer/writer. I speak Italian abbastanza bene! We love Italy, have visited ther many times and are especially enamored of Venezia (we also like the La Spezia, Cinque Terrre area)...especially off-season. We have rented apartments there in February, March, May and November for a minimum of 2 weeks. We are also very interesed in cooking, love shopping at the Rialto Mercato...so will need a good kitchen. We have good friends in Rome (I worked ther years ago in an advertising agency). Lately, we have found Rome a little too frantic and noisy but we might consider an apartment exchange there.
