We are in an urban (safe) neighborhood in New Jersey that is a short bus ride from our front steps to Times Square Manhattan (usually 10-15 minutes). The house is roomy, with a living room, dining room, den, three bedrooms, washer and dryer, and offices with computer hookups in the basement. It is old-fashioned and comfortable, but not fancy. The advantage of this house is it's central location. One caveat, the house is on the same property, and is in fact the parsonage, for an Episcopal church. The main advantage is the ability to get just about anywhere in the Northeast easily, with two major transportation hubs (in Hoboken and Manhattan) You won't need a car here at all. There is a grocery store directly across the street that is open 24 hours a day and lots of restaurants within walking distance.
This is definitely an urban neighborhood, although our home is unique in that we do have a spacious lawn and three parking places. It is in a transitional state at the current time, with upscale condos and restaurants, side-by-side with mom-and pop eateries. There is a large, friendly, hispanic population with many people from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Columbia and many Latin-American countries. If you love spanish food, you will be in heaven here.
My husband is the Rector at the church next to the house (Episcopal) and you would be staying in in the Rectory. There will be two Sunday services each Sunday with a relatively small congregation that won't bother you at all. You will hear church bells at noon and 6:00. We have a teenage son. We would prefer someone who is respectful of our situation, although there is nothing about it that should impinge on your vacation.
